Jeff Koons x H&M Artist Collaboration

While many a great artist doesn't receive recognition in their own time, Jeff Koons, is an exception. Koons is the American artist best known for taking everyday objects like his famous balloon dog and recreating them as high art. His work is being celebrated in a retrospective exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art from June 27-October 19, 2014.  As H&M is the sole fashion retail sponsor for for the exhibit, they have partnered with Koons to create their first ever artist collaboration.

H&M is opening a new flagship store at 589 5th Avenue, which will be the largest flagship store in the country. The store will be 57,000 square feet and be the first store in the New York area to offer H&M Home, in addition to H&M concepts for the whole family.  As part of the celebration Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog will adorn the facade of the store.  In addition, shoppers will have their own chance to take home a bit of Koons with a limited addition Dog Balloon leather handbag which will retail for $49.95. The handbag is unique and certain to sell out, so head over to the store July 17, 2014 at noon to snag your bag! The first 500 shoppers in line will also snag an H&M t-shirt and a gift card valued at $10 to $500.

Sample Sale Report: Marimekko

I dropped by the Marimekko sale tonight at 260 SampleSale to see what I could rustle up. Being a long time fan of the Finnish design company's eye-catching graphic aesthetic, I super excited for their first ever sample sale. There was a short line when I got to the sale that moved rather quickly. Like all sales at this location, you're required to check your purse and your coat.

Once inside I headed straight for the shoes and bedding. Here you can shop for sneakers in vibrant prints for just $30 a pair. And so the crowds were pillaging the boxes as staffers struggled to pull out new stock from under the tables and get it organized. I spotted size 3 (5 for women) all the way up to a 9.5 Mens. Some of the sneakers were separated from the other half but if you looked around a little, you could find the match without too much difficulty.

As for sheets, the sheet sets were just $20, while duvet covers were $40. They pretty much blew out of the sale and at least every other person in line seemed to be holding sheets in some form or other. There were pretty much 3 main patterns at the sale. The Lumimarja in taupe was only available in King size. I spotted some Kevatesikko print pillowcases for King beds and shower curtains (for $30, but the same shower curtain can be found at Crate & Barrel for $13). Kaivo Percale Duvets were available but only in King size. I spotted some Kivet's but only for long Twin size. I overheard the staffer say that they anticipate more bedding to arrive on Thursday.

I spent my holidays in Dallas/Fort Worth and Toronto and made it back in time to beat the storm Hercules into town. H&M x Times Square Opening with Lady Gaga

H&M is coming to Times Square with a bang this coming Thursday, November 14th at midnight with none other than Lady Gaga herself. The fashion icon/ pop superstar will be on hand at a special ribbon cutting and lighting of the H&M logo on the top of 4 Times Square.

Since Lady Gaga will be the one to kick off the opening, H&M will be selling her new album, ARTPOP,  at H&M Times Square and over 175 stores nationwide for an exclusive price of $9.95 while supplies last.

The Times Square location has about 42,000 square feet of space and will offer collections for women, men and children with a separate “shop-in-shop” area for accessories.  Guests at the store can get interactive with a digital runway that projects images of guests walking a virtual catwalk onto screens outside the store. Inside the store, you'll find LED screens, a charging station equipped with iPads, interactive mannequins and much more.

“This is truly a milestone moment for H&M, to have a footprint at the crossroads of the world and own a piece of the NYC skyline with our brand illuminated on top of this impressive building,” says Daniel Kulle, U.S. President for H&M. “With over 7,000 square feet of LED screens, and a 53 foot glitter wall in this ground breaking location, we knew we had to partner with a star who shines as bright as the store.”

To celebrate opening day, H&M Times Square will be open for a full 24 hours with a digital countdown announcing hourly offers for the whole family! The first 1000 shoppers in line will receive an Access to Fashion Pass, valued from $10 to $1000, and lots of fun giveaways! Twenty lucky winners will receive a golden ticket granting them a “meet and greet” with Lady Gaga and early access into the store to shop.

Also, important to note, the opening day coincides with the launch of the much anticipated Isabel Marant collection.  As a special treat, this will be the first store worldwide to debut the Isabel Marant for H&M collection to the public. Are you going to be getting in line?

Sample Sale Report: Jen Kao July 2013

I have to admit that I know that I haven't been going to as many sample sales as I have in the past but most days after work I just want to go home to my husband than stalk clothing in random places around the city. However, there still are those sample sales that call my name and causes my heart rate to accelerate. Jen Kao is one of these sales and I willingly trudged my way down to Varick Street to see what I might be able to take home. I ended up getting there around 6:40pm with only a couple other shoppers I had the whole floor to leisurely shop. Even though the sale officially ended at 7pm, staffers kindly granted me an extra 15 minutes so I wouldn't have to rush too much. They ask you to check your bags but you are allowed your cell phone and wallet in the sale.

Note that all prices mentioned are an additional 20% off which is taken at check out. This is done since a lot of merchandise was left over from a previous sample sale, it gave staffers ease in marking down. In the top picture the polka dot dress is $255 while the striped dress with polka dots is $180.

While sizes at the sale varied from XS to Large, they tended to skew on the small side and I noticed most of the sale is a XS to Medium or a 0 to 6.

Sample Sale Report: Cosabella

Our friends over at Cosabella wanted to share with you a quick peek at what is sexy and available at their sample sale. Cosabella's high quality Italian lingerie is now available at at a deep discount. Check out the rainbow of bras and babydolls you can snag. Babydoll's are now just $60, Soft bras $30 and hot pants $19. Although it may seem like an investment I've heard that Cosabella underpinnings last forever even with machine washing (in a delicates bag).  Last time the sample sale held a lot of 34B bras and size Medium hot pants, so I'm sure that sizing won't be too differently although there are also plenty of One Size options to discover as well. Sample Sale Report: Eugenia Kim

The city is absolutely sizzling so when the time came for me to make the trek to Ninth Avenue I wasn't sure I was going to make it with the 90 degree heat. Call me a wimp but after traveling to the Pacific North West the other week, I wasn't ready for the summer heat.  Fortunately it was worth it and I scored some fun hats galore at the Eugenia Kim sample sale.  The sale was bustling with the after work crowd and there are only 2 mirrors but staffers are super friendly and willing to help.

The room itself is surrounded by white shelving with pretty decked out hats that range in price from $15 to glitzy headbands and current season goods that are $225. Tables are laden with straw hats that have intricate raffia and beaded creatures like lobsters, parrots for $175. The Genie by Eugenia Kim line offered lower prices with simpler silhouettes and detailing.

Under the tables you'll find the bins which hold bargains galore ranging from free, (yes really free!), to $45. There were plenty of $5 hats - mostly winter styles, some with small defects like a missing pom pom or a split lining.  There were also quite a number of $10 options especially if you are looking for a straw hat without the bells and whistles. Here you can find the base hats that don't have silk scarves or adornments for just $10-25! I scored some $10 goodies here that I plan on making future DIY projects with.

One of my absolute favorite fun pieces was this absolutely adorable cat ear hat but unfortunately for me it was out of budget at about $235. These will definitely make a statement!

Some the knitted hats ranged from $20 to $75 and had lots of glitter yarns and sequins to keep things pretty.

Silk scarves that wrap around the head in a luxe do-rag manner were $35-55. Here is a look at the free bin. Many of the hats were tattered, missing buckles or just too small for my head, but they were free. I heard that they may be replenishing this throughout the sale but it looked pretty picked over.

Since I couldn't get that sweet cat ear hat I found solace in getting mouse ear pom pom headbands that are reminiscent of Minnie mouse for just $20 a pop. They had black, cream and fuschia. I opted for black so it would blend in with my hair for a subtler look.
These slick straw hats with military appeal were priced at $85.

There were also some awesome mens hats that ranged in price from $45 to $95. I ended up finding a Mr. Kim hat for just $15 that I took home with me.

Sample Sale Report: Lee Angel

If I seem a little M.I.A. lately I have been. It's just 9 days until I get married so I've been filling my time with anything but sample sales and crafting up a DIY storm in my spare time. However as history has taught me some sample sales are too good to be missed and I stopped by the Lee Angel Sample Sale in Soho last night to find great prices on the signature collection in addition to bargain basement pricing on a plethora of other accessories. Winning!

The Lee Angel signature collection which usually tops $150 per piece was at the best price that I can remember seeing it with necklaces for $20, Bracelets for $15 and Earrings for $10. At a sale when nothing tops $20, you can afford to get carried away.

The Lee Angel collections featured had a black heavy group, a multi color ethnic group, a frosted silver heavy group, a glittering gold group and a pearl group.

As for everything else at the sale? The world is your oyster with most everything from necklaces, earrings and bracelets at just $5 a pop.

Statement bib necklaces in smoked crystal beads, faux pearl baubles and chain link items that are made for the likes of "Loft", "J.Crew" and "Gap" are now just $5 each. Most items are not marked but in the rare case that you find a tagged item, they snip the tag before purchase.
If  $5 a pop is too steep, they have even cheaper offerings available with items from American Eagle at 2 for $5! Seriously it doesn't get much better than this. I ended up buying some fun baubles to use for my wedding's photobooth that had a "Great Gatsby" feel, including glittery headband and a feather necklace here.
