Sample Sale Report: Jen Kao July 2013

I have to admit that I know that I haven't been going to as many sample sales as I have in the past but most days after work I just want to go home to my husband than stalk clothing in random places around the city. However, there still are those sample sales that call my name and causes my heart rate to accelerate. Jen Kao is one of these sales and I willingly trudged my way down to Varick Street to see what I might be able to take home. I ended up getting there around 6:40pm with only a couple other shoppers I had the whole floor to leisurely shop. Even though the sale officially ended at 7pm, staffers kindly granted me an extra 15 minutes so I wouldn't have to rush too much. They ask you to check your bags but you are allowed your cell phone and wallet in the sale.

Note that all prices mentioned are an additional 20% off which is taken at check out. This is done since a lot of merchandise was left over from a previous sample sale, it gave staffers ease in marking down. In the top picture the polka dot dress is $255 while the striped dress with polka dots is $180.

While sizes at the sale varied from XS to Large, they tended to skew on the small side and I noticed most of the sale is a XS to Medium or a 0 to 6.

WWD released photo's of Lindsay Lohan's expansion into clothing from her legging line 6126. Normally I wouldn't really care much about Lohan's so called "designs", especially after her Ungaro pasty fiasco, but our friend Mary-Helen pointed out that it looks like Lindsay's "designing" is rooted in stealing from her wardrobe and from the talented young designer Jen Kao's FW 09 collection.

I'm not sure what fabric of materials Lohan had in mind but the style lines are plainly obvious. Her partner Kaylor told WWD, “She’s not a celebrity who lends her name to a brand...She’s intimately involved from Day One. She picks fabrics. She looks at trims. She picks buttons. She doesn’t let anything go into production without trying it on.” Kaylor didn't lie. Ms Lohan tried on the dress, was photographed in said dress, and now is claiming it as her own. Did you think no one would notice?

Let actor's act and designer's design. If Lohan was such a fan of Jen Kao's designs, would it not be better to ask the designer to guest design a style for her collection instead?

Sample Sale Report: Jen Kao

We love Jen Kao, her architectural lines, fluid jerseys and edgy pieces made us super excited for her sample sale. Her sale was a definite experience. It was in a huge open space with lots of natural light, it felt more like I was in a showroom of archival quality pieces than a sample sale. Perhaps because we were the only people save for a very kind girl attending the desk and a rather bored looking security guard. It didn’t feel like a sample sale but rather a boutique space.

Prices however were unfortunately purchase inhibitive. There were about 10 racks of clothing and several table set up showcasing footwear, jewelry and lookbooks.

Sheer jersey tees and tanks were about $90. The cheapest item I saw was a stiff ponte tank for $70 and a signature print tee for $70, there were only one each. There were also some bikini’s in signature print for $135…and the prices just go up from there. Featherweight soft airy sweaters were around $271-320. Dresses about $350-475. Leather Biker jackets for $750. The most expensive pieces were the multi color/brass sequin side legging for $650 and the multi color sequin center dress for $1200.
