NYFW Spring 2014: Proenza Schouler

The designers behind Proenza Schouler never fail to win us over season after season with their sharp eye, graphic prints and well tailored pieces with an oft architectural hand.

Inspired by American mid-century modern furniture  design, you can see influences in the way they handle fabric and in turn the way the clothes hang on the body. Wide legged culottes, broomstick pleated skirts with bronze or gold foil swish around the legs. Carefully constructed pleat peplums pair with fitted cropped tops. Shoulders are soft and rounded while hemlines of both skirt and pant fall between the knee and ankle. Throughout the collection a feminine waist emphasis is consistent.

Wallpaper-like print, a jacket that resembles a shag rug, square metal hardware that borrows from furniture are where the inspiration is most obvious. Although it continues with subtler ways as well including how fabrics are printed almost to the edge like wall paper. The color palette was simple with black and  cream dominating the show with the addition of the colors wine red and goldenrod. There was also a heavy metallic presence with silver, gold and bronze accents and fabrics abounding.

This collection is softer than it's predecessors. The fresh change that an interest in draping brought about is both serene and absolutely winning.

DIY: Proenza Schouler Rope Necklace

Ever since I first saw this Proenza Schouler Rope necklace with stones I’ve been eyeing it wistfully.  And although it’s currently on sale for 30% off, $315 was still too steep for my budget.  I decided that instead of just wanting the necklace, it was time to get my craft on.  The longer I stared at the necklace I realized that it was consisted mainly of techniques that I used to create friendship bracelets and hair wraps as a teenager – suddenly the project became much less intimidating.

What you’ll need is 3 different colors of accessory cord, 4 colors of embroidery floss, some waxed cord, a darning needle, thread, 3 stone beads, some pin ends and some needle nose pliers.  If you are in NYC you can pick up some accessory cord, embroidery floss and waxed cord at Daytona Trimming.  I picked up my beads and pin ends at New York Bead, but there are plenty of bead shops around 6th Avenue at 39th St.

DIY: Proenza Schouler x J Brand Graffiti Jeans

Ever since I first saw these Proenza Schouler x J Brand collaboration jeans make their way down the runway as part of the Fall 2010 runway show, I’ve been contemplating ways to make these jeans find their way into my closet. The jeans are Japanese stretch denim that have been graphically printed and then hand painted to accentuate texture making each pair uniquely fabulous.

Unfortunately this level of fabulous does not come cheap and at $550 a pair they are out of my Fall budget. Fortunately with a little bit of time to spare and a lovely pair of black jeans already in my closet, I was ready to take a stab and create my own take on these jeans. I sort of combined 2 of the combos together using both white and blue to create a slightly different finish. I started off with a trusty pair of black skinny jeans (I used Rich & Skinny but you can use just about any pair).

I had picked up some bottles of both white and primary blue fabric paint at the art supply store. They cost me about $1.50 a bottle. I used a styrofoam plate for carefree mixing and easy brush access and a nylon bristle brush. I also had an old plastic container available with clean water and a scrap piece of paper to cover my work area.

Then I started with the white paint making scribbly loose circular patterns across the front of the jeans while occasionally dipping the paint brush in water to help create more fluid lines and varying opacities.

Continue creating scribbles/circles until you have completely covered the front of the jeans. I was impatient and was curious as to how it would look so I actually did one leg at a time. The great thing about this project is that there is a lot of room for your own interpretation and you don’t have to be too careful about the order in which you do things, I actually went back several times later on to create more scribbles in certain colors on areas that appeared to need more attention.

I started to add in blue and other colors in the same family. I actually decided to use some acrylic paint I had at home for additional color variation. I’m not sure how it will hold up in the wash but seeing as it’s plastic when it dries, I’m hoping it will be all good.

When the front is dry the back is ready to work on. Make sure that you cover all areas, including waistband and around the pockets if possible. When the back is complete, allow to dry before working on the sides. You can flatten the legs out sideways and fill in any gaps that you have missed for a more continuous effect.

Voila! And there you have it! Although it’s a slightly different finish, I think it get’s the overall statement across. I’m pretty happy with the results! What do you think?

First Look: Geren Ford FW2010

Despite the gloomy weather and inches of snow that paved our path from Brooklyn, Lani and I made the trek to the Soho Grand for the Geren Ford presentation. We were definitely glad we made the trip. The presentation wasn't started yet when we arrived to the cute adorable basement with vintage wallpaper I wasn't sure what to expect, but it actually provided the perfect backdrop for the pieces.

Summed up in 2 words?

Luxe Glam.

The collection oozed effortless glamor from another era. Soft fingerwave hairstyles and dark red lipstick screamed 1920s/30s film star Clara Bow while the feminized tailoring, draped satin blouses, sculpted ruffles felt very 1940s to me.

This was not at all a purely historical collection but one of thoughtful inspiration made modern in only the best possible way. The silhouettes were modernized by sporty details from exposed zippers, burnished metal snaps & bangles and inset panels. The play between matte and shine was well balanced by the differences in texture and the fact that nothing that was shine, was too shiny. I loved both the athletic inspired bottoms pictured above, although I've seen similar panelled leather leggings before.

There was one bustier top that was subtley reminiscent of Proenza Schouler with all it's trapunto stitching, but the assymetric peplum and contrast color straps differentiated it. Splatter print on silk looked organic and helped lend the collection some edge. As if some "ladylike" models went secretly frolicking in the mud but it doesn't really matter because they are beautiful.

I'm not sure who was responsible for the shoes but I thought whoever styled the collection did a really great job! Jewelry was created by Flutter NYC, I thought those layered chain necklaces with vintage looking crystal brooches were awesome and I also admired those stacked studded bangles.

Steve Dumain the designer behind the handbag and accessories line Be & D has been hard at work since we interviewed him last year. Here are a few of my fave looks from their Cruise collection that's about to hit stores any day now!

Lately I have been really feeling Tie Dye and Ikat effects! Perhaps it's because the Proenza Schouler Spring 2010 Collections left such a strong impression on me and I was reminded of my love by this great DIY PS project on WhoWhatWearDaily yesterday by super crafty and extraordinary blogger P.S. I Made This. Or perhaps because I never quite how to do it as a child, I've always been obsessed by the variation of colors?

Anyways, the Be & D take for their handbag collection is so right for so many reasons! It still maintains the same vibe but the subtler tones make it perfect for everyday wear. Also, it maintains a slightly tribal artsy vibe that will take you into the Spring & Summer 2010 seasons with ease! I prefer the versions that include Be & D's signature studs that add a little extra toughness to the pretty pastel tones. My ultimate fave has got to be the Ikat in the Garbo Tote!
