Bummed You Missed the Geren Ford Sample Sale?

If you're bummed about missing yesterday's Geren Ford sample sale in the city, turn that frown upside down. While you won't find $20 samples online, Gilt Groupe is having a Geren Ford sale until Monday 7/12 at noon. Many of the pieces are a little more than 60% off retail.
If they're out of your size at Gilt Groupe, head over to gerenford.com where many of the same pieces are 60% off and available in more sizes. There are also additional styles and shoes on sale. Shoe prices range from just a little over $100 for flats to $150 for heels.

LA Sample Sale: Geren Ford

The last time I went to a Geren Ford sample sale in LA, I picked up two dresses - one for $60 and a damaged sample for only $10. I'm actually going to be in California this weekend for my sister's graduation, but not soon enough to catch this sale!

First Look: Geren Ford FW2010

Despite the gloomy weather and inches of snow that paved our path from Brooklyn, Lani and I made the trek to the Soho Grand for the Geren Ford presentation. We were definitely glad we made the trip. The presentation wasn't started yet when we arrived to the cute adorable basement with vintage wallpaper I wasn't sure what to expect, but it actually provided the perfect backdrop for the pieces.

Summed up in 2 words?

Luxe Glam.

The collection oozed effortless glamor from another era. Soft fingerwave hairstyles and dark red lipstick screamed 1920s/30s film star Clara Bow while the feminized tailoring, draped satin blouses, sculpted ruffles felt very 1940s to me.

This was not at all a purely historical collection but one of thoughtful inspiration made modern in only the best possible way. The silhouettes were modernized by sporty details from exposed zippers, burnished metal snaps & bangles and inset panels. The play between matte and shine was well balanced by the differences in texture and the fact that nothing that was shine, was too shiny. I loved both the athletic inspired bottoms pictured above, although I've seen similar panelled leather leggings before.

There was one bustier top that was subtley reminiscent of Proenza Schouler with all it's trapunto stitching, but the assymetric peplum and contrast color straps differentiated it. Splatter print on silk looked organic and helped lend the collection some edge. As if some "ladylike" models went secretly frolicking in the mud but it doesn't really matter because they are beautiful.

I'm not sure who was responsible for the shoes but I thought whoever styled the collection did a really great job! Jewelry was created by Flutter NYC, I thought those layered chain necklaces with vintage looking crystal brooches were awesome and I also admired those stacked studded bangles.

Fashion Week Blizzard

Today marks the unofficial start of New York Fashion Week! Although the tents are not open yet, there are a myriad events scheduled to happen tonight and happen they will!

What can I say except New Yorkers are resilient folks!

I actually got sent home from the office as New York City braces for the worst snow storm we have faced in my 3 1/2 years of living here! Something about the heating grates and the subway usually keep snow at bay in the city and usually it's gone almost instantly, leaving sidewalks clear but a bit slushy on the roads but today I noticed it was starting to pile up. Here are a couple views from midtown...looks like the folks at the Tents are keeping busy as multiple shovellers are working hard to keep the doors clear for tomorrow.

Unfortunately this is what it currently looks like outside my apartment! Will I make it? I'm Canadian, so I will definitely try...will I make it back home? Only time will tell ;) I'm packing a toothbrush and relying on the Subway and some waterproof boots!

I went to the Geren Ford sample sale in LA yesterday, and it was pretty awesome. I scored two dresses, one was a sample for $60 and one was a "damaged" piece from the Fall 08 collection for $10! Most pieces were $60-$100, but there was also a rack of tanks for $30. Great selection, lots of inventory including pieces that are currently in stores. If you're a Geren Ford fan, you'll be in heaven.
