Runway Review: Cynthia Rowley Fall 2012

The runway show started and before I even see the clothes in person, huge screens are projecting the models as they walk from multiple angles providing an artful backdrop to the show. It's no wonder seating was arranged entirely on one side of an extra long runway.

The collection is inspired by mechanics and the idea of a overall that is so easy, effortless but also simultaneously tough and sexy.  Design details like zip fronts, buckle straps, button ups reference the garb that mechanics wear but the fabrications in silk, leather, denim, plaid and jersey and clusters of sequin patches suggest luxury instead of a garage.  It's not to say this collection was without any layering - turtlenecks looked great with sparkling DanniJo jewels that come so high up the neck that it makes me think of women pictured in National Geographic. 

Burgundy, Fire Orange, Chocolate, Olive, Denim, Indigo Blue and White comprised the sophisticated color palette for the collection.

The prints were most interesting.  Some reminded me of that swirly pattern you see in a puddle of oil while others looked tie-dyed in a way that a bright rag might look if a mechanic wiped their hands on it at the end of the day.  Others prints almost machine-like giving a robotic feel and others still look a bit like a burning flame.

The collection contrasted boxy easy tops or leather tee shirts with slip skirts and slim cut trousers with a slightly dropped crotch for a slouchy effortless look.

I loved how this collection stuck very closely to the theme but in a very non-literal and unexpected delivery while keeping true to Rowley's aesthetic of creating non-girly feminine clothes that are both comfortable and effortlessly stylish.

A Closer Look: Mr. Powers

A couple weeks ago I posted about the upcoming launch of Mr. Powers - Cynthia Rowley's menswear line. Thanks to the lovely folks at Cynthia Rowley, I got a closer look via the line charts for the upcoming fall collection set to launch this July.

The collection will house several button down cardigans which range in price from $265-$275. I think the cabin sweater with the broad collar is my fave of the lot since the weave of the knit adds texture and a geometric feel to the piece.

Continuing on with sweaters, the collection will house some v-necks and a square patterned piece which will retail for $275-$295.

Shirts will range anywhere from $165-$230.

Tweed chesterfield and velveteen cigar jackets will retail for $495-$595. These are one of my faves from the fall collection. There's just something about a great jacket that I love. The cigar jacket looks pretty dope with the trim - so I'm definitely planning on checking it out once the line drops.

Outerwear pieces range from $195 for the puffer vest to $595 for the down piece. The majority of the other jackets are set to retail at $495.

In addition to the cigar jackets, the other thing that I'm really digging from this collection are the Ts. Stripes are always a plus in my book and I lovethe color combo of the white/grey/orange in addition to the variation in the stripe sizes. The marbalized T has an amazingly organic and fluid print which just plain rocks. Both will retail for $125.

Last up are accessories. Striped socks are priced at $18, wool hats at $95, and belts at $125.

Can't wait until July when I can check out these pieces in person!

Cynthia Rowley: Menswear aka Mr. Powers

While Cynthia Rowley currently has a very small collection of menswear, the designer will be revamping her menswear line and re-branding it under the name Mr. Powers (named after her hubby). The fall collection is targeted to launch in July online and in stores. The collection is set to include sweaters/cardigans ($275), jackets/sport coats ($495), shirts ($195) and T's ($60-$125). Bottoms are nixed for this collection due to the Rowley's belief that everything looks better in jeans and that guys already have their favorite pants - which I think is a smart move on her part.

Based on the above pics (courtesy of WWD), the aesthetic of the pieces look fresh yet polished - so I'm definitely looking forward to the launch!

Cynthia Rowley x Band-Aid Luncheon

After my flustered arrival at the Cynthia Rowley show I was feeling a little tentative about making the trek from Lincoln Center to the Upper East Side. I almost never venture to the UES unless I am headed for a doctor’s appointment or a rare museum visit. However, all my inhibitions melted away upon arrival at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. I was led out towards the garden and with flowers in bloom and the sun shinning, it was an oasis for the weary fashion crowd. The perfect last days of summer event that was thrown in conjunction with Bandaid and Cynthia Rowley celebrating the recent launch of her lovely bejeweled Dress-up Band-Aids.Sipping on cocktails and lemonade while chatting and enjoying a delicious spread of flatbreads, pasta salad, asparagus, grilled chicken, and fresh fruit was just what the doctor ordered. Lani and I had a chance to spend a little time with the lovely ladies Lala Lopez and Wendy Lam of Nitrolicious and re-charge our batteries. I found myself musing that if this was only Day 3, what else will the week ahead bring? Fortunately we had front loaded our schedules, but I push thoughts of Monday and going back to the office out of my head for now and focus on the more important things in life, like cream puffs!Being the dedicated bloggers we are, we found a moment to sneak away and set up a mini work station using our netbook loaners and pound out some notes of everything we’ve seen/experienced so far. Any spare moment we could find, these netbooks were our NYFW lifelines so I really would like to again thank Vivienne Tam/HP and ASUS for helping keep us both stylish and tech savvy this NYFW.

Too bad we couldn’t sit for hours on end or explore the museum, Fashion Week calls and we headed back to midtown for another show. Thankfully Band-Aid kept us well stocked to handle all the running in heels with their Friction Block (formerly known as Blister Block) and some lovely Cynthia Rowley Band-Aids, plus some of the loveliest cookies that I ever did see. As lovely as they were, cookies were meant to be eaten and I was thankful for a sugary pick-me-up when I finally got home and the heels came off.
