Next H&M Designer: Alexander Wang

H&M announced last night at the Coachella Music Festival, that their next designer collaboration will be with the ubiquitous designer Alexander Wang. This partnership is unique because it will be the first time that an American designer teams up with H&M on a designer collaboration! Can you believe it?

 I was an early Wang adopter, when I stumbled upon his sample sale back in 2007 when he first launched his line in New York City. Slowly but surely the designer has built a reputation for his Downtown cool style that built on the Model-Off-Duty look. The look which combined refined with raw has helped bring about a new urban uniform that is anything but sweet.

The Alexander Wang x H&M collection will feature apparel and accessories for women and men. Wang's capsule collection will go beyond fashion and feature a his take on lifestyle product. The full collection will be available in 250 H&M stores worldwide, and online starting November 6, 2014.

Alexander Wang says, “I am honored to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle.”

Sample Sales November 5-11, 2012

It's odd that it's only been one week since Sandy aka Frankenstorm has changed the way that New Yorkers are living their day to day lives. There is so much that we took for granted - heat, hot water, electricity, public transit, food and gas. I personally feel very lucky to have made it through the storm with almost no major life changes except not being able to go anywhere for a few days, a tree snapping in half a few feet from the house and coming down with a terrible cold. I know that so many are still suffering still without heat, without food and without homes. It's been amazing to see the city pull together in so many ways. I've seen people opening up their homes to help their neighbors and friends and plenty of people collecting clothes, canned goods and even on the front lines going door to door. I hope that you've made it through as fortunately as I have and would take a minute to consider donating to help those that are still in need via The Salvation Army or The American Red Cross.

Dockers Designers Collection

Finally got a chance to stop by Bloomingdale's on 59th this past weekend to check out the Dockers Designer Collection. GQ's nominees for "Best New Designer" each had a chance to collaborate with Dockers to create one look to be produced and sold. Instead of having only the winner design a capsule collection (last year it was Billy Reid who created a collection with Levi's), this year all nominees a chance to work with Dockers.

Alexander Wang took home GQ's award this year and kept his look simple and in line with his T line. The utility pants are going for $200 and the T is going for $74.

For a more safari look - Michael Bastian's getup is bang on. The one pocket cargo pants are $200 and the 1/2 button up shirt is $175.

If you're going for a clean look - Miller's Oath has a great pair of cuffed pants ($200) and button up ($150).

If you're into pleats, Patrick Ervell created a pair of pants with tiny pleats at the waist line which are also going for $200 (accompanying shirt is $240).

For a more distressed look - Riviera Club has you covered (pants $200, top $150).

The last look (any my least favorite) is the getup designed by Rick Klotz (Warriors of Radness) - just personal preference I guess. The elastic bottom pants are going for $175 and the windbreaker is $175.

Overall, while I like the majority of the pieces - I think the pricing is a bit peculiar. Everything in the Dockers collection is priced relatively on par with each other - but when you look at the each of the designer's namesake collections, there is a definite divide in terms of price point (i.e. Michael Bastian being the highest and Warriors of Radness being the lowest). Also - A Wang's basic Ts retail for about $75 which is the same price as the dockers collab which again I find strange...

Online Shopping Steals: Alexander Wang

If you didn’t have the chance to make it to the Alexander Wang sample sale or couldn’t stomach the line, SSENSE the e-commerce site is having a major sale with prices up to 70% off.  Anyways, just thought it was interesting to note that some of these prices are most likely similar or slightly less than what you can find at the sample sale this time around. Here are a few bargains that I spotted.   Shop quickly because sizes won’t last long.

Sample Sale Report: Alexander Wang

If you come to the Alexander Wang sample sale looking for shoes under size 36 or affordable samples you are out of luck. This sample sale was all about stock and while for the T line prices start at $35, most of what I would actually want was from collection and in the $140+ realm. This time around I also noticed that the merchandise was a refreshingly not as black but instead a sea of luxe neutrals.

T by Alexander Wang is $35, $60 or $100. I spotted some zip ponte shorts and tee shirts for $35, zip front ponte dresses and tee shirt dresses for $60, and little jackets and long maxi satin slip dresses for $100.

Ready To Wear is $60, $100 – then increments of $20 until $200, Then $240, $260 and finally as marked. I spotted a very unique architectural vest for $340, printed organza see-through blouses for $140, Perfect cropped trench coats for $240.

That said there are plenty of sizes and the sale seemed to be operating as a pretty tightly run ship. Expect bag check but fortunately it was run efficiently, no change rooms although women had set up a pseudo change area behind a few racks and security personnel set up in every 10 feet of the space. Although lines were forming as I left the sale they seemed to be moving.

For the coveted hardware heavy handbags organized neatly on 2 racks. There is also a table of mini box looking bags with metal corners reminiscent of luggage. Handbags are priced at $250, $300, $350 or $400.

For the shoes they run from sizes 36 to 41, with best selection from 37 to 40. Footwear is priced at $170, $250 and $300. Plenty of lace up bootie styles. I spotted a pair of wedge slip on loafers shoes that were on The Outnet last week for $46 at the sample sale for $250.

The Menswear section was relatively empty save for a few women shopping for their boyfriend's or maybe even themselves. Mens T is priced at $35, $60, $100, $160, $200, $240 and $250.

Signs clearly indicate there will be new stock everyday and I am anticipating there will be heavy markdowns once Sunday rolls around if the stock will hold out for that long. During my visit during the friends and family segment, the crowds were bustling but not overwhelming.

While his first menswear line T boats a much more casual feel, the progression of this RTW line maintains the same vibe and ease but with more fitted garments and a greater play on textures - so far I definitely like what I'm seeing.



Overall there's definitely some solid pieces in this collection (especially the outerwear) so I can't wait to see the items once they drop.



Along with the RTW collection, Wang is introducing some accessories for men including some slouchy leather bags, wallets, passport holders and change purses. Shoes will follow in pursuit.
