NYFW Spring 2011: Tibi
Tibi was one of the last shows I caught this past NYFW. I found myself breezing through check in and quickly inside a space that had a completely different feel than any of the other shows I’d attended at Lincoln Center. The scene was set with a mysterious and fantasy inspired shrub backdrop.
Down the middle of the runway benches were set up – breaking up the runway and creating an opportunity for front row A-listers to get an even more intimate view of the clothing. We caught reality tv star Olivia Palermo chatting with some gal pals and anxiously peering down the runway.
This season,designer Amy Smilovic’s inspiration was actually herself after receiving feedback from retailers that she should inject some of her personal style into the clothing. What we got were plenty of sweet, easy fitting frocks, relaxed separates, airy pointelle knits.
The color palette looked very fresh although it was fairly neutral in sand, ivory, tobacco and black – save for pops of dandelion, royal purple and pimento. Prints were limited to a dalmation/snow leopard dot and an oversized ethnic paisley. One interesting thing to note is that virtually every look in the collection was head-to-toe one color or one print.
Shoulders were squared, skirts swingy and hemlines a bit longer than we normally would associate with Tibi. Cut-out embroidery, crochet panels applique were the key details that added texture, polish and just the right amount of femininity to the collection.

Inside Designer Sketchbooks FW 2010
I honestly don't like to pay too close attention to the news on a daily basis (excluding the fashion & food world) because most of the time it it can be a bit depressing. I do randomly look at daily papers while I commute so I won't be completely clueless about the world.
The other day was just one such morning I was glad I looked! am New York featured some illustrations by various designers that showed a peek of what is to come starting today + some quotes about their inspiration. I love looking at illustration sometimes even more than looking at photos. There is so much feeling and thought with each line and I love how illustrations often reflect something about the designers themselves or their ideal woman.
To note, I love how Erin Fetherson's figure even resembles her! Jill Stuart & Herve Leger look to be sexy with an attitude. Vivienne Tam and Brian Reyes looks similarly sculptural and simplified, I'm interested in seeing the different execution of the real garmnts. The Tibi girls look to be funky and adorable. DKNY appears to be New York glam and cool but her figure looks a little shy and humble too. Pamela Roland and Edition by Georges Chakra look elegant, mysterious and untouchable. Do these sketches speak to you?

A good selection of merch from the Fall 2008 Collection (really a stock sale), but most silhouettes were a bit boxy, conservative and a little older for me. Very Retro 70's vibe. I always try to buy the really signature pieces, but the items in the prints that I loved were Maxi Dresses that were way too long for my 5'3" frame (I would definitely have to hem them, but at this price I shouldn't have to alter at all). Maybe some of the clothing I anticipate wearing more in 5 years? Pricing was reasonable, esp on the Jackets and Coats.
