M:Zero Pop Up Shop
The Melissa jelly shoes have made their way to menswear - enter M:Zero. If you're a fan, ALTER is hosting a pop up shop starting today - March 17th, 2011 at their location in Williamsburg. There are a couple styles: A laced oxford and slip on - both constructed out of plastic and both will set you back $130 a pair.

While I don't mind the style of the shoe - I don't know if I'm a fan. Plastic/PVC is not porous, so it won't let your feet breathe. The women's line didn't have as much of an issue here since womens' shoes/sandals cover way less of your foot in terms of surface area. That being said, there are plenty of colors to choose from so if you're looking for a rainboot/shoe that doesn't look like one - this might be a great option for you. Melissa x Gaetano Pesce Collaboration
The discs are made of recycled plastic actually meant to be cut away to create your own very customizable pair of shoes. The designer said, “I wanted something that would give the consumer the opportunity to change the design”. I wonder how these would look cut out as sandals or slippers! It seems like a fun pair of shoes that you could transform if ever you got bored.

It's no secret that I'm in love (cough, obsessed) with Melissa shoes. I have another reason to endorse them. They're even easier to clean that I expected! In the past I've used just water and soap, but over the weekend I stepped in some nasty, nasty gum. And the gum had been under the sun so it was super soft and got everywhere, all over the sides and everything. I tried pulling it off, but it was caked on. Remembering an Icon: Michael Jackson
Can't believe that Michael Jackson is no longer with us, he passed away today of a reported Cardiac Arrest at the young age of 50. What remains now is his undying influence on music, pop culture and fashion.
He was always ahead of the game, influencing an entire generation during the 80s and continuing to inspire designers and shows including the sequin gloves at Louis Vuitton and the crystalized jackets that sparked Balmainia. In fact, he was even seen spotted wearing Balmain in his final days. Though I'm saddened by the loss, I can't help but reminisce over his incredible impact on style.
Looking back over the years, here are just a handful of looks he's helped inspire:

Sample Sale Report: Melissa
Stopped by the Melissa Sample Sale last night but only made it to the final few minutes! They close it 7pm and I made it there at 7pm and slipped into the building via a girl who was leaving the sale. Once inside, I thought I might have a hard time as a late comer, but staff did not say anything, nor were they rushing the shoppers inside to get out as they do at too many other sales in the city.
Prices ranged from $25-55! There were quite a few pairs of $25 shoes maybe 5 or 6 styles, although most pairs that caught my eye averaged $45.
Unfortunately there were not many left of the Vivienne Westwood Lady Dragon shoes with the plastic heart, which was the shoe of my desire. Only was able to find a black pair with the Orb logo in my size. The shoes also felt like they run slightly big and would require being worn with socks. There were plenty of other options in Vivienne Westwood, especially in the Mary Jane style at $50 and the 3 Strap which I believe was $45.
As for other designer options I picked up a pair of Alexander Herchcovitch's Joy black and white oxfords. I've always had a fascination with spectator style shoes, and as I reported previously that Mannish Loafers are a growing trend I was happy to pick up a pair for $45. At Save Fashion, they only had the black ones in my size! Unfortunately at the sale these were the first shoes to go and currently there is only a size 5 black and a size 6 black/white left! However plenty of Scarfun Summer's left!

Melissa Shoe Review: Love Them
1. They're comfortable - made from Melissa's signature MELFLEX rubber which molds to your feet over time.
2. They're green - made from recycled plastic. Melissa is a sustainable Brazilian company known for exceeding Fair Trade benchmarks and being one of the most environmentally responsible companies in the world. They recycle 99.9% of the waste and water used in the production process.
3. They're cute and funky, especially the designer collaborations like Alexandre Herchcovitch and Vivienne Westwood Anglomania.
4. They're great for spring & summer. Made of plastic, they're perfect for rainy weather and the pool!
5. They're easy to clean. Just a little elbow grease and ta da, like new!
Have I sold you on them? They're not perfect, but my only real complaint is that they can be a little noisy on certain surfaces. It's a bit challenging to tread lightly in them, so so ninja sneak attacks!
You can check them out at a few New York boutiques online and in store - Epaulet and Alter in Brooklyn and Cry Wolf in East Village. They're also available online at tobi.com and eluxury.com where a few pairs are on sale.
For the most part, I think the shoes run true to size. A few pairs like the "Lady Dragon" heels are a bit narrow for me, but my feet are a bit wide. It was a sad day when I realized I wouldn't be able to own that pair.

Sale Report: Save Fashion Pop Up
One thing I was a bit confused by was I thought this event was supposed to mostly showcase emerging design talent, so I was confused by the representation of Madewell (J.Crew's Denim) and of Earnest Sewn.
Lots of sweet Melissa jellies ranged mostly in the 40 something to 50 something dollar range although there was one style of strappy shoes for 35! The pair of jelly loafers I saw were $57...I was heavily considering them as an alternative to rainboots!
Sorry boys, no merchandise for men that I could see...
But the Save Fashion Pop Up shop will last til the end of the month and be rotating designers every Friday!!!
