Look for Less: Simone Rocha Neon Floral Dress

My friend Kate has been eying Simone Rocha's floral embroidered dress. The shape of the dress and floral pattern are adorably sweet and the neon makes it a standout piece, but the $1,500 price tag is quite steep for the everyday woman. So I browsed the web to help her find a few more affordable alternatives and here's what I found:
Cynthia Steffe, $248
The closet match was this "sharp lime" dress from Cynthia Steffe. Like the Simone Rocha dress, it's a classic shape in a neon hue with a lace overlay.

Sample Sale Report: Cynthia Steffe
Season after season the Cynthia Steffe sample sale is one that I make sure that I never miss. I was curious what the new space would bring and it's quite cavernous and divided into 2 sides. One side was bustling so I headed that way first while the other side was quiet. I learned soon that the left side was the Cynthia Steffe merchandise while the other side was random merchandise from Chaus, Vince Camuto and other labels. The great news is that there is room to breath and move around without bumping elbows with too many ladies although you may find that at times ladies have filled an entire rack with their merchandise that they are guarding with a watchful eye.

Cynthia Steffe Fall 2011

70s Chic: Cynthia Steffe Spring 2011
The 70s are back in full swing this spring. Refinery 29 and The Fashion Spot have reported on this trend citing Marc Jacob's runway collection and others like Derek Lam, Jason Wu and Etro.
Another collection that comes to mind when I think 70s-inspired is Cynthia Steffe spring 2011.
Wide leg pants, pant suits
Tan-orange color scheme, geometric prints
Short shorts, halter necklines
One-pieces, one-shoulder cuts
Cynthia Steffe is a Sugar Rock Catwalk favorite as the line is perfect example of fem with a little twist (and they have the best sample sales). The spring 2011 collection is super wearable and definitely something I want to own. I like the flowy frocks, but I especially love the more structured separates like the leather shorts and jackets. And as always, I'm a fan of the prints and color blocking!

Sample Sale Report: Multi-Brand + Cynthia Steffe Sale
So perhaps you already caught my Tweets from the mixed designer sale today? If not make sure you follow SugrRockCatwalk to stay up-to-date with the latest from sample sales.
Anyways, since Cynthia Steffe was one of the designer’s featured at the sale I was super excited. I did wonder however why the address was different for this sale. And it turned out that it wasn’t the usual legendary sample sales that has my heart racing and my arms laden with goodies. Guess I’ll have to wait til next Spring for one of those.
This time around it was a much humbler sample sale that took place in a large space on 7th Avenue. The room was bright (2 skylights ensured it) but humid. There was a muggy feeling about the space despite the cool temperatures outside.
The shoppers on scene from what I could tell were mostly patternmakers from the area.
Perhaps this was a true “sample” sale as I had a hard time discerning sizes although things did appear to be on the small end of the spectrum and I didn’t notice any styles in a full size run. I did however notice some floral printed pants in variations of the same print. Perhaps test prototypes to see which one was going to go forward?
There was plenty of room to look, although occasionally you’d have to go out of your way to avoid several small groups of women (the patternmakers) shopping together.
I did not spot any fitting rooms or mirrors. The Cash registers looked pretty clear when I was at the sale.
If you are looking for Chaus or Kenneth Cole, this made up about 70-80% of the sale, samples will run you just $10. If you are looking for Cynthia Steffe styles are $20 a pop except for leathers which are $50. I didn’t spot any leather though. There are definitely some jems to be found but I wasn’t inspired to dig around too much. I did spot a cute camel coat in one ladies arms for $50.

UPDATED: Sample Sale Report: Cynthia Steffe
UPDATED: So here is my haul as you can see it's much smaller than my previous season's Cynthia Steffe Sales.
I love this bright red silk jersey dress that I picked up for $30 :) Silk Jersey T-Neck for $20
Silky pleated/pegged pants - $20, Printed Voile Blouse $20
My mom is in town and visiting (hmmm do you see a shopping pattern with me an my family ;) ) and told me that when she stopped by the sale a mere 2 hours later, it was really WIPED out! hardly a thing left to by save for about 2 racks of black pants and 1/2 a rack of miscellaneous merch. She did still escape with 3 items but in all her sales (yes she happens to come in town in time for every Cynthia Steffe sale somehow) it's been the most pathetic and emptiest she's ever seen it.
If you are wondering what brought upon this change in bringing down one of the most beloved sales to being the craziest battle for the goods imaginable one of our readers gives us a clue:
WORST!!!! 4 women who hoarded everything -- they were from great neck and were selling on ebay -each bought 8 bags of clothing and were there at 9am and the clueless STEFFE people allowed them to hold piles for 4 hours and let them in early at 930 so unfair STEFFE NEEDS TO GET ITS ACT TOGETHER
I'm pretty annoyed after reading thing comment because ebay sellers ruin things for everyone and don't allow people who genuinely want things and can't afford to pay jacked up prices to miss out and suffer. I encourage you all to not buy from these hoarders at all costs and let them get stuck with the piles of merch that they had piled up to nearly the ceiling... EVIL >:(

The Buys: Cynthia Steffe Sample Sale
As I reported earlier today, I stormed the Cynthia Steffe to get some great finds! While the mirrors were few (only about 4 and constantly crowded) my co-worker did a great job helping me edit down. It's awesome that we don't wear the same size so if things were cute we could trade :)
The sale is cheaper and better quality than H&M so although some samples take a little work to adjust or sew, it's more than worth my time for the great quality fabrics and unique detailing.
The sale will probably get sparse by lunch tomorrow so go early for best results! I may do a second comb through at lunch as I've managed to find things on the 2nd day, although much slimmer pickings. On the plus side it's usually way less crowded so it's easier to see things and yourself in the mirror.

There is no changing area, so it’s sort of a free for all where women are changing at every crevice and only a handful of full length mirrors available. So out of respect for women at the sale I didn’t take photos.
The sale has been pretty ravaged and some of the best samples are now in random piles clumped up on window sils, but I still managed to pick up a dress, 2 tops, a skirt and 3 unfinished samples for the amazing total of $85.
The prices are pretty unbelievable:

Non CS Vintage $15
Unfinished Garments $5
The line to pay is now a bagging station where they total up your merch and a paying station. Note if you have cash you can skip ahead of people as their credit card system is pretty slow.
Recommend wearing leggings & a tank top for try ons and bringing a friend to be your “mirror”.

Cynthia Steffe is a nice designer. I haven't actually met her, but a friend of mine has. My friend gushes about how personable and sweet Cynthia Steffe actually is as she walks and works the floors herself at Saks! Further proof? She sells her beautiful, high quality merchandise at very affordable prices so that girls like me, who love & breathe fashion, but don't make very much money can have a chance to own something lovely too. Not very many designers have real sample sales anymore, too many times I find myself at them and not being able to afford anything, or possibly 1 thing.
I went to the preview event for this sample sale tonight and the prices were awesome.

Richie Gleason X Tommy Hilfiger
I love to buy product from designers that I know are not only talented but are especially good people. When I hear things about designers like Cynthia Steffe who are actually really kind in real life it makes me wear their clothing with an extra bit of pride. It’s like the clothes take on a personal feel like they were crafted in love and warmth instead of just made to sell.
You may not have heard of Richie Gleason yet, but I gotta tell you that he is a really nice guy! The type of person who counts his blessings, absolutely adores his wife and is beyond thrilled to be a father! He is also a NYC based art director who designs tee-shirts in his spare time.
I bought some of his adorable series of tee’s for myself and friends that he worked on a few years ago. But now he will be re-launching his tee's with updated artwork and a NYC twist. The collaboration will be hitting stores this week with 6 styles available for men and 6 styles available for women.
The Back proclaims statements like “Hip-Hop”, “Dirty Bird”, “Stud”, “Man-eater” and includes dictionary definitions of the terms on the back bottom left corner.. While the front features appropriate graphics. You can check them out all the designs on his website in the NEW WORK section.
