I made my way over to the Jil Sander store in SoHo still half asleep - and was about the 15th person in line .  I got there at 8:05am...a little intense I know - but the last two Jil Sander sales were amazing.  So I decided to sacrifice the comfort of my bed for the prospect of some new threads.  Big mistake.

Sample Sale Report: Jil Sander (Part Deux)

   

So after yesterday's fail, I decided to try again - this morning.  I arrived around 9:50am and thought - hey this ain't too bad (about 40 or so people in front of me).  Turns out I ended up waiting in line for 80 minutes to get in....in the rain!  The sale only lets in a few people at a time as shoppers exit so even though the line outside might look tame - it moves at a snail's pace.  Fear not though - there are some SERIOUS deals going on inside.  I'm talking 85% off RTW (mens and womens), 85% off all shoes, and 80% all accessories (bags, belts, etc.).

After finally making my way up to the sale and checking in my wet bag and coat, I was surprised to notice that the sale is actually quite tame compared to other behemath sample sales.  There's room for you to move around and a few mirrors set up around the showroom for you to try on items (no changing rooms/areas).  At the front of the space are men's shoes - there's not too many styles and sizing is fairly random (39-42), but there's definitely deals to be had.  Just to give you a ballpark figure, shoes priced at $450 are going for $67.50!  It's sort of hit or miss but if you find something you like in your size, it's amazing.

As with most sales, womenswear dominates - but there's a few solid racks of menswear pieces including trenches, dress pants, button ups, and a couple tables of knits and T's.  Accessories are at the back of the showroom.

Sizing for men is available but quickly depleting.  With dress shirts coming up around $55 a piece, they're getting picked up pretty quickly.  Smaller sizes seemed to be the scarcest, with everything else following in close pursuit.

I spotted a lone menswear bag which I loved.  It's a messenger style with gold hardware and pebbled leather (from the fall 2010 collection) - and at 80% off it will set you back about $400 (originally around $2,000).  Men's basic V-neck T's are amazingly priced at $14.25 a pop (down from $95).  Black and navy were almost non-existent but if you're looking for a white or beige T, there's plenty left in an assortment of sizes.  There were some great knitwear pieces including a grey striped tonal V-neck going for $68 (down from about $450).

Women's shoes are located in the middle of the room - literally all over the middle.  As with the mens shoes, there are some amazing deals to be had, but this requires more digging due to women and their affinity for shoes.

By the time I was checking out, the sale seemed a bit more cramped than when I first entered but overall it's still very managable and sane.  My only gripe is that they ask you to leave your umbrella on the first floor by the elevator - but by the time I went down to pick it up, someone had already swiped it....

Overall, this is one of those sales that's totally worth the all the madness that comes with sample sales and I'm so glad that I gave it a second chance after yesterday!  If you're a fan of Jil Sander's aestheic (designed by Raf Simons), then it's definitely worth checking out.  Even though this is supposedly an invite only sale, no one checked for anyone's invite in the morning so you shouldn't have a problem getting in!

Sample Sale Report: Jil Sander (or lack thereof)

Headed down to the Jil Sander sample sale today and got in line around 4:20pm.  The sale was supposed to close at 6pm - but doors shuttered just before 5pm (right when I was at the front of the door)!  Needless to say it was irritating.  Don't get me wrong...I'm sure there were plenty of people up there but seriously - if you're going to shut down a sale due to high traffic, you need to communicate that clearly.  And by clearly, I don't mean just to the people who were within an earshot of the door.  Seriously, even Target has better PR tactics than this.  Put up a sign, have an employee man the exit telling people that the sale is closed....do SOMETHING.

And by something, I don't mean leaving the doorman to fend off ravenous bargain hunters looking to score some serious deals (i.e. 80% off).  Seriously, if you see this guy - cut him some slack.  He doesn't work the sample sale, or for Jil Sander so lay off of him.  He's doing his job.  Jil Sander's PR - that's another story...

+J: Fall/Winter 2011 Launch

A couple days ago I hit up Uniqlo to check out the final +J collection. There was a bit of line up in the store but nothing too crazy. The two new stores opening on 34th and 5th Ave will also carry the lineup so fear not in case you don't get a chance to check it out.

Overall - the collection is heavy on outerwear and there was a noticeable improvement in the construction of the outerwear over the previous fall/winter season - definitely a plus. The shapes of the jacket themselves also ramped up this season which was nice to see. Prices for outerwear range from $169.90 - $229.90.

Jackets seemed to be moving quickly - along with size selection so if you're looking to pick up some items now's the time!

If you're a fan of the puffer, there were a few of the quilted down parkas left and quite a few vests.

The jacket shown above left is one of the items on my shortlist - unfortunately, it's launch date is set for late October so for now I'll just have to wait. I love the simplicity of the jacket paired with the oversized collar and hood.

Plenty of blazers in tweed and wool were available including this flannel shawl collar piece (shown above left) and tweed blazer (shown above left). Prices on blazers run from $169.90-$199.90.

The other items that I thought were great were the pants. Slim fitting wool pants all going for $69.90 which can carry you from the office to happy hour.

Sample Sale Report: Jil Sander

As soon as I found out about this sale I literally bolted from my desk and made my way down to Soho. The sale is neatly organized with men's and women's RTW, accessories and shoes all at 80% off retail. While there are no changerooms there are a few mirrors

Pinstriped dress shirt with white collar - $86

For men, there are a few wool suits, some wool jackets, blazers, dress shirts, jeans and some sweaters/Ts. The bigger ticket items (suints, jackets, blazers) will run you about $400 or less (down from about $2,000). Shoes ran about $150-$200 for men (were $700-$900). Sizing is pretty broad across the spectrum but I'm not sure how long that will last (medium sizing for shirting seems to be the most sparse).

Geometric shape T - $33

Dress shirts will hover between $80-$100 (down from $400-$500). Some of the more affordable items to snag include Ts which come out to $33 (there are only two styles and they come in L-XXL but they run small) and skinny ties which will also set you back about $30. I ended up grabbing a shirt for work and a couple T's that reminded me of the Flinstones with the geometric prints!

I didn't have time to scope out the women's section but there were some amazing bags up for grabs - all at 75% off. I saw a lot of people going for the bags so my guess is that they won't last too much longer!

Note: I'm not sure if this sale is open to the public so if you make the trek out, please note that you might not be able to get in. When I arrived, I was asked to show my invite. I pretended to scramble through my bag to pull out my imaginary invite and ended up saying that I left the printout on my desk at work. That did the trick and the security guard let me pass. PHEW!

+J: Fall 2010 Menswear

Earlier this week, I had the chance to check out the new +J line which launched last week. I tried to grab a peek this past weekend but the lineup in the store was a bit too much for me to handle so I thought I'd try on a weekday. While I didn't get a chance to see all the pieces since a lot of merchandise sold out, I didn't end up having to wait in line which was nice.

This is Jil Sander's third collection with Uniqlo and for menswear, is one of the most affordable designer collaborations out there. I thought I'd post some pics of what items were still left at the store when I went in. Since I went after the opening weekend, a lot of the merch was cleared out which doesn't come as a surprise. If you're looking for a pair of skinny jeans (which are not actually from this season) or some button up shirts there's quite a few - both at $50 a pop. There were some vests and puffers available in smaller sizes left (XS, or S) and some wool coats and blazers (mostly S and a few L).

Of the outerwear choices that were still available, I thought the Pea coat wasn't too shabby. It's definitely a heavier wool piece with a good weight to it but only a few were left.

Out of everything I saw - I took a definite liking to a wool tuxedo jacket which would be a great staple piece for fall. The jacket also comes in black but the only ones I could find were dressed on the mannequins.

+J Update

My roommate stopped my Uniqlo yesterday afternoon and reports that there was plenty of merch and the shelves looked fully stocked. To note, they have tonnes of stock of +J that they will be unpacking today for additional colors. The lines outside the store continued and they allowed only a few customers in at a time to make for a pleasant shopping experience without crowds, mayhem and manageable lines at the cash :)

Jill Sander for Uniqlo's +J Pandemonium

Today at 10am Uniqlo opened it's doors to the public but lines were already forming well before 9:30am. Surprisingly according to Racked.com the majority of those in line were men 70-75% of the crowd! Also Racked mentions that they may re-evaluate and re-stock in 2 weeks if the line does well.

My friend NH dropped by during lunch and said the line looked quite long and out of control. I finally was able to stop by after work as I had some time to kill and at 6:35pm the line was still formed. I decided to come back later on and when I returned at 7:43pm, there was no line and I was able to enter the store with ease.

Inside the store, I was suprised as the center section just beyond all the mannequins in the cases was a sectioned off "tent" which contained the majority of the +J clothing aside from a few racks of clothing to be returned on the outskirts. For women I did spot both the wool pea coat and trench coat, both long and short puffer jackets. However all the items had multiples but it still seemed slightly sparse. I noticed a lot of the S-M sizes were taken but XS, L and XL still remained for women's. For men's there were plenty of XS-S sizes.

For men the pickings looked substantially slimmer and much of the merch was in disheveled random piles on the tables. Racks seemed pretty bare.

I only looked quickly but the collection was overall very subdued tones of olive, navy, grey, white and black. The wool on the jackets seemed nice, the puffers seemed very light and fluffy but still pretty thin, the material had a matte shine effect to it which I couldn't decide if I hated or liked. Quality overall seems pretty high. Fit seems to be slimmer than the usual boxy Uniqlo stylings. Staff seemed working hard at trying to get things in order and bringing back merch that had been tried on. Although the racks did seem sort of empty, there seemed to be a little bit of everything left, you only have to look for it a bit harder and have a bit more patience.

The Cut reports that the following items were nearly sold out but the store will be restocking tonight:

Jil Sander's +J return to Fashion

As we reported earlier this year Uniqlo and Jil Sander are developing a special Uniqlo collection, bearing the designer’s minimalist look. According to WWD the date for the designer's comeback has been set. The +J collection will launch:

in the United States and the United Kingdom on Oct. 1 and in Asia on Oct. 2. Prices range from 1,990 yen, or about $21 at current exchange, for a stretch t-shirt to 14,900 yen, or $155, for a Chesterfield coat.
