Sample Sale Report Update: Simon Spurr

I stopped by quickly during lunch today at the Simon Spurr sale to check out the price reductions (for full price list scroll to the bottom).  A lot of the merchandise has moved since I last visited but there's still plenty available.  Sizing has dwindled down (denim is mostly between 30-32) and suits are for the most part 48.

Sample Sale Report: Simon Spurr

If you were as dissapointed as I was in the Jil Sander sample sale - head on over to the Simon Spurr sale where there's PLENTY of amazing gear - all at around 70% off retail.  Similar to Jil Sander with Raf Simons exiting the label, Simon Spurr recently did the same thing, so items from Spring 12 on sale are one of the last collections designed by Spurr himself.

Simon Spurr: Exits Own Company

This past weekend WWD announced that Simon Spurr exited his own label last Friday which he started back in 2006.  The designer was not at liberty to say what was going on.  All this just after his recent CFDA nomination for menswear designer of the year.  Ever since moving to New York, I've kept tabs on each of his collections - all of which sport well tailored pieces with a touch of British swagger thrown into an American label.  Hands down, he is one of my fave menswear designers out there.

On a side note, I'm always curious as to how emerging designers structure their companies.  Often times, lines are backed by a venture capitalist ("VC") who fund the operations of the company during its infancy stages with the hopes that the line will succeed and grow in the future.  In return for the initial cash forked over, the VCs take an ownership stake in the company which may seem all fine and dandy until someone gets booted from their own company.  More often than not, the problem lies in how the company was structured in the beginning. I'm not saying this is what happened here since nothing has been disclosed but you gotta wonder right?

Either way, I'm excited to see what Spurr comes up with next.  With stints at YSL, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren Purple/Black labels, and Tommy Hilfiger along with his host of accolades - he's bound to do something great.  Who knows, maybe he'll return  to his own label in the future - after all, Jil Sander is going back to...well Jil Sander!

Sample Sale Report: Simon Spurr/Spurr

Stopped by at the Simon Spurr/Spurr sample sale at lunch today. Even though the space is pretty small - there's plenty of space to move around and take your time. The staff are all super friendly and helpful and best of all there's no lineup! The sale is a bit on the pricier side but if you're a fan of the two lines - it's worth it! Simon Spurr has some of the best ready to wear pieces for men out there so I always look forward to this sale! There's one big mirror set up for you to look at and one corner of the room is partitioned off for you to try things on. It's small but it works.
The highlight of the sale is definitely the denim section - everything was going for $75 a pair - SPURR or Simon Spurr Label. Personally, these jeans have become a staple in my wardrobe so I snapped up a couple pairs in the pipe fit. In terms of sizing, there's a big range with lots of size 32. Popular sizes like 33 are still available but quickly diminishing. There was also a lonely box of denim/cords that was just $25.
Pricing was a bit higher than past sales but still 50-80% off what you would pay for at retail. The sale is heavy on outerwear with some amazing pea coats going for $700 (retails for $1,495) and army green parkas for $650. There were also some pieces from this past Spring collection that were a steal at just $50-$75 a piece. Sizing for the jackets runs the gamut but there were definitely more mediums available than any other size.
The above black heavy cotton coat is going for $350 (retails for $995) - I cringed a little when I saw this since I just bought this a couple weeks ago. On sale of course - but definitely nowhere near that price. I still love this jacket though...
Dress shirts from the SPURR line were $90 while button ups from the Simon Spurr label were $180. Last sale these were priced at $75 and $125 respectively and ran out uber quickly - there's definitely more styles and sizes available this time around. Leather pieces from the SPURR label hovered around $400 while leathers from the collection line were roughly $1,500.
Blazers range from $400-$800 and are mostly in size 38-40 - anything smaller or larger is few and far between. SPURR tuxedos were going for $800 and there were only a couple in size 40. Knitwear ranged from $125-$300 and again there was a range of sizing. Spurr T's were $30 and Simon Spurr V-neck T's were $90.

Although 11th Avenue seems a bit out of the way - it's definitely worth it if you're a fan of the two lines. Last sale, prices dropped by the end (I ended up scoring 2 pairs of jeans, a polo, and T for around $130) so hopefully the same holds true this time around.

Sample Sale Report: Simon Spurr + SPURR

So when I found out about this sale last week, I was stoked - Simon Spurr makes amazingly crafted and constructed garments and I missed the sale last time around. There was no way I was letting this one pass me by so I booked a "personal" day off work. Shopping is personal right? On second thought, don't answer that please...

I arrived around 10 in the morning and was glad the space wasn't too crowded. The sale is extremely neat and organized by style and size. Denim is on one wall, Ts on another, suits/shirts/outerwer on another, prototypes on the fourth wall and knits and ties laid out in the middle on a table. There's one big mirror set up and one small section curtained off for you to try things on (one at a time).

Prices are clearly marked - denim was $75 (SPURR)/$125 (Simon Spurr), Ts were $25 (SPURR)/$40 (Simon Spurr), and polos were $35 (SPURR). Sweaters ranged from $75-$150 for SPURR pieces and $250 for Simon Spurr. Button up shirts were $75 (SPURR)/$125 (Simon Spurr). Scarves and hats were both $150 a pop.

Denim was arranged by size and there was a decent range of sizes. Most of the styles are either slim fit or bootcut and mostly came in dark indigo with a few other colors. There were plenty of basic Ts in a range of sizes and colors (crew neck, v-neck, v-neck w/oversized pocket, and polos). If I didn't already have a bajillion plain T's I definitely would have picked up a few of these!

The middle tables housed the knits and accessories. The pricing of the sweaters for the SPURR line are based on the label type - the "older" label pieces are 1/2 the price of the "newer" labels. The majority of what I saw were the newer lables (i.e. newer merch).

There was one rack of shirts available - mostly in various stripes under the SPURR label. There was one Simon Spurr button down in oversized plaid available but in limited sizing (mostly size 17). Part of the reason why I love both of these lines are that I love the shirts. The majority of shirts have spread collars which I prefer aesthetically over traditional collars.

Outerwear, suiting and leathers are individually priced. There were a couple of suits available and one style of dress pants ($180 - in size 33 and 35).

There were a couple of leather pieces - both of which were amazing and priced around the $375 mark. The washed taupe biker jacked with ribbed cuffs was probably my favorite (only available in M). There was also an amazingly soft black lamb jacket which had a mesh lining for around the same price.

Other outerwear options include a couple of cotton based jackets which were going for $250-$272. The piece on the right is from the current spring collection and currently retails for full price at Bloomingdales. In general for most of the outerwear, most of the sizing is M with a few other sizes scattered into the mix. There was also a denim jacket for $100 (all XL).

There were also two racks of prototype merchandise - i.e. true samples! Quite a few of the pieces had no tags or size indication but were almost all size M (my best guess). Spurr items from this section were going for $100 and were mostly made up of outerwear including some wool pieces which is a steal. Simon Spurr sample pieces were going for $200 a pop and again were mostly made up out of outerwear (including winter items).

Selection of ties at just $30 a piece

When all was said and done, I ended up with a couple shirts for work - the piece on the right is an incredibly light weight cotton - great for those uber hot days. If you're a fan of Simon Spurr it's definitely worth checking out even if it's a bit off the beaten path location wise. The sales people also noted that they will be restocking later today!
