Better than Love. Hurts.

A departure from my usual girly music I've been finding myself listening to Hurts. If you're missing the melancholic melodies of the 80s, Hurts, debut single Better Than Love will completely fill that void! The stylish duo, Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson, who hail from Manchester, UK released the track only a few days ago but they have already landed themselves on the BBC Sound of 2010 poll along with my recent personal fave Ellie Goulding. I have to say that I love their sleek sophistication as much as I like their sound.

You can check them out through myspace.com/ithurts, their youtube channel or download their single for free here.

Starry Eyed for Ellie Goulding

Artist: Ellie Goulding
Recommended if you like: Marina and the Diamonds, Little Boots, Florence + the Machine

Perhaps I am having a very Brit moment, after megadoses of Marina and the Diamonds for the last couple months, Ellie Goulding has creeped into my daily playlist for the last few weeks. Maybe you haven't heard of her yet, but she is definitely headed to blow up! She topped the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and won the Critics Choice Award at the 2010 BRIT Awards following in the footsteps of last years winner, Adele.

The upbeat dancey melodies, her soft but commanding voice and honestly innocent lyrics are a winning combination. While Lani is a friend of the track Underneath the Sheets, I'm personally hooked on Starry Eyed, Guns and Horses and The Writer.

Her debut album Lights was released on March 1, 2010. You can check out some of her songs on
myspace.com/elliegoulding. For a free MP3 of Wish I Stayed click here.

Inside: Tria Blue Pop-Up Lounge

On my way home from work I decided to stop by the Tria Blue Pop-Up Lounge and see what it was all about. I had first heard about Tria Beauty a couple years ago when their at Home Laser Removal system came out but unfortunately I had just splurged on a No!No! system so I never got a chance to check out Tria until now. I was greeted by some lovely blue haired ladies who quickly ushered me into a blue oasis from the city rush.
Align Center
They have lounge area in the front set up for people to have a seat and relax to the sound of an in-house DJ.

Tria recently introduced a Blue Light treatment that claims to clear, treat and nourish skin by eliminating acne causing bacteria before it starts the cycle. After signing in I was quickly ushered to a pod station where I was told about the product and how to use it.
Honestly I am a firm believer that great skin is the key to beauty. And honestly I am pretty lucky that I have been blessed by great genetics and look years younger than I actually am. But I do have have always fought for great skin. Growing up I never really struggled with acne, had a relatively pimple free teenage existence and it wasn't until my mid-twenties that trouble hit me. Regular visits to the Derm plus Retin A/Epiduo keep my skin in check and previously it was the use of tetracycline. However, I often wondered if there was a better option than chemicals or medication. Perhaps this Tria Blue Light Therapy is the answer? Apparently this is the same light that they offer in dermatologists offices but available at your convenience on a daily basis.

The device is actually pretty small and looks like a fancy remote control. It turns on when you press it against your face and there is a timer that shows how long you've been using it and a subtle beep that goes off every 30 seconds as you make circular motions over your face. The tip feels like silicone and glides pretty easily across the surface of your skin. Every 2 1/2 minutes it makes a distinctive noise and within 5 minutes you are done. When I tried it, I could only see a glow over my face and felt gentle warm sensation on the surface of my skin. Apparently you see results within 7 days and women have been returning day after day to see the effectiveness of the product during the pop-up. Actually the staff encouraged me to come back again. I would definitely like to try this again to see if the claims are true.

While after one treatment, I can't say I felt a difference, I did feel pretty relaxed. Maybe it was the music or the comfortable pod chairs? Or maybe it was having someone do my make up? I had a truly relaxing experience and would recommend anyone to stop by.

Bonus, they gift you a free aluminum water bottle and there is a goody table full of blue candy ready for snacking. It's all blue and instantly remindes me of Percy and the Olympians ;)
Who: Tria Blue
What: Enjoy complimentary Tria Blue Light treatment, relax and receive complimentary hair and make-up, listen to music spun by a live DJ and munch on some blue candy.
When: Now through April 12, 2010. Sat 10am-6pm, Sun noon-6pm. Mon-Tues 11:30am-7:30pm
Where: 155 Fifth Avenue (b/n 21-22nd St)

Eat This: Macaron Day NYC

Macarons are supposedly the new cupcakes. To me they're completely different and each hold a special place in my fat kid heart. If you've never had one before, they're amazing, delicate French pastries.

Our good friend Karen informed us that today is the first annual Macaron Day in NYC, and a bunch of bakeries around the city are celebrating by providing free macarons to customers. To receive a free macaron tell the shop you are there for Macaron Day NYC; participating locations will provide one macaron per customer with quantities limited by location.

My favorite macaron shop in the city is Madeleine Patisserie at 132 West 23rd Street. For the full list of participants, visit macarondaynyc.com. Bon appetit!

LA & NY: Free Manicures Courtesy of Kirstie Alley's Big Life

Kirstie Alley's got a new reality show Big Life on A&E, and they're promoting this weekend with free manicures in LA and NY! The manicures are with an exclusive Essie color made just for the show. It's called "Life. Lick it." and is actually quite nice. It's a deep purple, which I would consider more of a fall color, but I like it so much I might wear it into spring.

You can get your complimentary manicure at Dashing Diva, Rehoboth Spa and Spa Bells in New York and Bellacures, Nail Garden, Deluxe Nail Bar and Dashing Diva in Los Angeles. For details and a complete list of locations, go to aetv.com.

Oh, and you get a free bottle of "Life. Lick it." to take home! This is all while supplies last. If you're in New York and going out in the rain, God speed.

Now Playing: Caribou "Odessa"

Artist: Caribou
Recommended If You Like: Of Montreal, Four Tet, Grizzly Bear

Caribou is one of my favorite indie electronic artists. While Caribou does live shows as a band, it's actually a one man project from Canada. I discovered his music during my days of college radio when he released The Milk Of Human Kindness, and I've been following his music since. A little psychedelic and atmosphere, I often find myself daydreaming when I listen to Caribou.

"Odessa" is the first single off Caribou's upcoming album Swim. I've had this song on loop for days. It's has the space electronic sound I've come to love from Caribou, but unlike songs of the past this one is a little dancey. Get the track for free at caribou.fm by simply entering your email address. Download and enjoy!

Giveaway: dirtystory Peacock Cuff

We're giving away a peacock cuff from dirtystory. You might recall seeing a similar cuff in a few Style Diary posts.

dirtystory is a project by former-microbiologist, Michelle. She started experimenting with materials after paying way too much for a pair of earrings that she later realized were decorated with rub-on transfers.

Michelle starts her process by imaging what would look good on a wrist, then designs in Photoshop. She uses an image transfer technique and coats each piece several times with crystal clear, waterproof, glass-like lacquer. It really works! My arm and cuff have yet to turn green, even though the rain.
Thank you to Michelle for making this giveaway possible! I really love my cuff, so I'm really excited to be give one away to a Sugar Rock Catwalk reader.

For a chance to win, leave a comment with your favorite item from dirtystory's store, name and email address - spell out the dot com so your spam robot doesn't pick up your address. Contest is open to US and Canada residents and ends Thursday, 10/01/09.

Lenka

Artist: Lenka
Recommended If You Like: Regina Spector, Ingrid Michaelson, Priscilla Ahn, Jem

Forgive me my love of girly music but my friend LD introduced me to Lenka recently and I am hooked. Lenka is actually an Australian television actress turned singer-songwriter, but don't let the actress part stop you from giving her a chance. Her self titled album launched last year and you might recognize her song "The Show" from the Old Navy commercial. My fave tracks are Trouble is a Friend, Skipalong, Dangerous and Sweet and cause it's my birthday, I'm especially feeling the song We Will Not Grow Old . Check her out on www.myspace.com/lenkamusic or download a re-mix of the track Trouble is a Friend here.

Lenka will be playing in Los Angeles on October, 29 2009 at the Hotel Cafe, unfortunately no New York dates on her tour yet!
