Blowout at Privé Salon

185174

I mentioned previously the kind folks at Refinery 29 Reserve wanted me to experience one of their experience packages for myself in person. Honestly I’ve never really had a full blowout treatment so I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I booked my appointment as soon as I received the voucher for the same day. Within a couple hours I found myself back at the Soho Grand Hotel, the location of so many fashion show’s past, and in a brightly lit serene environment. My appointment was at 3:30pm, I got there at 3:25pm. After a quick check-in at the desk, I showed them the voucher I got from Reserve, they took my coat, gave me a cotton robe and led me to a seating area. The staff seemed to bend over backwards to make sure I was comfortable. Even so far as helping me find the ties to the robe, while I was putting it on. Not even a minute had passed and hairstylist Melisand, came to collect me and introduced herself. All the staffers at the salon seems to be very French. After an initial examination of my hair and a brief consultation, I was led to an aqua and turquoise tiled room and soon my head was being gently scrubbed and shampooed, conditioned and combed. After having my head wrapped in a towel, I am asked if I want a beverage as I am led back to Melisand.

Do I want something curly, wavy or straight? Since I wear my hair straight all the time, I decided to do something I don’t normally do and go curly.prive blowout5prive blowout4

Melisand patiently blow dried my hair and then started wrapping sections patiently around a round brush. I didn’t know that you could create curls using only a round brush.

As I sat in the chair I felt like it was an almost therapeutic experience. Another staffer brought over refreshments, both peppermint tea and ice water, and Melisand stops blow drying my hair to ask if I’d like to drink my tea. I am starting to feel pampered and understand why women have blowouts. I also begin to imagine what it feels like to be Gwyneth Paltrow, as I know she is a client of the salon.

After much time, all the sections have been carefully made. Then each ringlet was carefully touched up with just the slightest touch of a curling iron. Each strand of hair is placed with care, gently tousled, touched with product and molded until it creates exactly the right effect.

Sexy, tousled and still very soft. Hair perfection. Melisand shows me my hair at every angle to make sure that I am happy. Soon afterwards, two other staffers come by and tell me how fabulous I look. A girl could get used to compliments! Although I am a bit of a jaded New Yorker sometimes and I wonder if they really mean it.

Finishing off my experience, I am given 2 full size bottles of salon quality shampoo and conditioner and a 15% off card for my next visit. While having a blowout isn’t something I would do on a regular basis, for those special occasions or days when you just need to feel pretty it just might be worth it. I have to admit it that having great hair put an extra bounce in my step and made me feel pretty darn beautiful.

While I’m no expert at blowouts, I did wrap my head in a silk scarf to sleep and it preserved my look for a couple days after the blowout.

Check Out: Refinery 29’s Reserve

181

So by now I’m sure that most of you have tried all the usual suspects when it comes to saving some money. Tippr, Living Social, Blackboard Eats for food and activities and Gilt Groupe, HauteLook, ideeli and MyNines for clothing and make-up. Heck, I’ve tried just about all of them and just when I think I’m over it, Refinery 29 sucks me back in with it’s Reserve website. It’s a website that is geared towards fashion lifestyle with limited time offerings of like 50% off lingerie, 55% off jewelry and more. Since the crew at Refinery 29 are such great curators of fabulousness you can not only find great deals but you can discover cool new brands and establishments you never knew existed. Case and point? The current offer to the Privé salon in the Soho Grand Hotel. $50 will get you a blowout and bang trim, a goody bag full of luxe Privé products, and a VIP card for a 10% discount on your next visit--a $125 value! Since it’s winter time and I’m feeling kind of blah, I can’t wait to get a bit of a hair refresher to get me ready for NYFW!

*Full disclaimer: The kind folks at Reserve are sending me a voucher so I can test drive the experience. Will let you know more about how it goes!

Sample Sale Report: (212)

I dropped by the Refinery29.com hosted exclusive sample sale for New York based line (212). The design duo Scott and Anthony (a former model and Parsons grad) started the line 5 years ago and they've been creating well priced date worthy duds ever since! The current fall collection is inspired by Paris in the 60s!

The sale was very calm and they were still setting up when I stopped by. Formal price lists were not in place yet but I found out from a staffer that prices are all under $100! Everything is between $29 and $95.

Most tops are between $45-55. Most Sweaters are between $45-65. Jackets and Dresses between $75-95. Most styles run the full size spectrum and additional stock can be requested.

The sale is pretty tight with 2 racks of merch displayed, some sweaters on a window sill and 2 boxes of other various styles to dig through. Compared to the Wang sale though it was a nice relief to have a calmer shopping experience. I did not spy any fitting rooms but a lonely mirror by the wall available for use.

Now Wearing...

MINI HAT! Last week, my tiny topper and I were on one of my favorite blogs Refinery29! It totally made my day, even if most of the comments were anti.
Mini boater hat - H&M
Brown tank - Mossimo, Target
Cream lace skirt - H&M/DIY
Necklace - Ann Taylor Loft

Also from last week, I wore my mini hat to see Britney Spears in concert at Madison Square Garden! I thought it was appropriate for occasion. My friend Tom got discounted tickets from work at the last minute, so we were way back. Still good seats!
I enjoyed the show, but not going to lie, I was kind of disappointed! I thought Britney was back? She didn't dance very much. The majority of the time, she was pushed around the stage by her backup dancers. I know she’s had two kids and been through a lot, but Madonna is 51. Keep up! I wish I had seen her in concert back in 2001 when she did the Dream Within a Dream tour with Wade Robson.

If you didn't get concert tickets, don't worry. You really didn't miss out. We all know she lip syncs, and almost everything was pre-recorded including "1, 2, 3, c'mon boys!" Seriously? I think the only thing she actually said was, "Thank you, New York!" Plus, almost the entire show is on YouTube.

Save Fashion in NY

"Shop. Save. Show Your Love."

Save Fashion is genius. A month long pop-up shop near Port Authority organized by the great folks at Refinery 29 to help New York's independent designers during this recession. Prices can still be a bit steep for some as the most lust-worthy pieces are $100+, but you will get a good deal! The discounts are amazing!

Each week will feature different designers. This week includes Charlotte Ronson, VPL, Flippa K, Rachel Comey, Madewell and Melissa Shoes just to name a few. Next week will be women's wear as well, and the following week, Week 3, will feature menswear.

Check out the sweet video from The Cut for a better idea of what to expect.

I checked it out during my lunch break and had to keep myself from freaking out. I was a little overwhelmed by the large selection and just general excitement. Heads up, the lines are a bit slow and the mirrors in the fitting room are pretty useless (they're like funhouse mirrors), so I highly recommend bringing a friend for company and a good second opinion. 41st & 8th, do it!
