Iron Man 3 x Schwan Brands

Last week, Jeff and I were invited to attend Schwan's screening of Iron Man 3. I'm not going to lie, I was super excited because I am a bit of a geek when it comes to super hero movies, probably stems from my childhood days of watching TV shows made for boys thanks to my younger brother. Anyways the screening was super fun and we were spoiled with an assortment of pies from the Schwan's collection! Pizza pies in all shapes and forms by Red Baron, Tony's and Freschetta. Also dessert pies from Mrs. Smith's and Edwards in flavors like cherry, apple crumble and chocolate cream. Something about seeing these frozen foods kind of brought me back to childhood, even though I could no longer eat them with my GF,  DF diet, everything smelled wonderful and I was a bit jealous of all those around me. I overheard folks chattering that movies will never be the same again now that they got to eat pie while watching.

The movie itself was a lot of fun! I really got into it and embarrassingly even screamed out loud a couple of times. Yes, I can't stand surprises, even when I know they are coming. I am not normally a fan of 3-D movies, this was well done. While Iron Man 3 is not at all artful or cinematically beautiful, it is action done right and in some ways a tech lovers dream.

Go Watch: Pitch Perfect

Saw this last week at Union Square when it opened up in select theaters and I have to say I LOVED this movie.  I have this paranoia about bedbugs at theaters so in my 2+ years in NYC, I've only seen two movies via Manhattan bound theaters...and this was one of them.   If you're a fan of music, dance, glee (when it was actually good), etc. then you'll like this movie.  For movies, I like mine lighthearted, funny and witty - and Pitch Perfect has all of the above.



Seriously, I laughed so hard every time Rebel Wilson opened her mouth ("Fat Amy") - she is so friggen hilarious!  If you want a good laugh and want to watch something that doesn't take itself too seriously I definitely recommend this movie!

Film to See: Bill Cunningham New York

If you haven't already, I highly recommend going to see Bill Cunningham New York. It's a wonderful film on the fascinating and inspiring New York Times legend - a great profile on Bill and fashion over the decades! You'll laugh. You'll smile and definitely leave the theater happy.

Not sure if you’ve heard about the indoor oasis that will chase away winter blues, but 4500 square feet in a Nolita pop-up space has been completely transformed with a fake lawn, trees, park benches and even a see-saw!  A skylight above let’s in the natural sunshine.  The space is open to the public free daily from 11am-6pm from now through January 30th.

Yoga is available every weekday from noon-1pm with a suggested donation of $15.  For foodies, weekends bring vendors like Luke’s Lobster and Mexicue who will be setting up food stalls in the park.  Later this month Solber Pupusa and Baking for Good will also be joining in.  What I’m most excited about is that Urban Daddy is going to be hosting movie nights in the park!  Can’t wait to check it out, it’s all the benefits of NYC summer minus the muggy humidity!

HP Brings Tech to Sex and the City

A couple weeks ago before Sex & The City 2 hit theaters, HP invited us to a press day which included a panel and screening of the movie.

The panel included: Sugar Rock Catwalk fav Vivienne Tam, former IMG VP Fern Mallis, Project Runway runner-up Emilio Sosa and a couple other guests. Fern Mallis discussed the history of Fashion Week. It was really interesting to learn about the humble beginnings of New York Fashion Week and the evolution into a highly covered, commercial event.

The speakers discussed the recent convergence of fashion and technology. If you think about it, it's seems only natural. In fact it's almost surprising that it didn't happen sooner because both fashion and technology are ubiquitous. Everyone is affected by fashion, whether or not they are willing to admit it. And technology is everywhere, though people often don't think of it as such unless it's new. Technology can serve to make fashion better both in design and functionality, and fashion can obviously serve to make technology more aesthetically appealing.

The movie screening was at the legendary Paris Theater near Columbus Circle. Not going to lie, my expectations for the movie were pretty low as it usually is for most sequels, but Sex and the City 2 proved me wrong. It was a super fun movie; I even laughed out loud a few times.

The movie was definitely over the top with everything from clothes, to story line and sex jokes, which could have been bad, but it was great like a semi-guilty pleasure. Maybe it was just me, but I felt like a lot of the jokes in this movie were way raunchier than anything from the series or the first movie.

Believe it or not, I felt like the sequel actually had more substance than the first movie. There were a couple honest and heartfelt conversations around marriage, motherhood and aging. If you haven't seen it already and are a Sex and the City fan, go see it this weekend so we can talk about it. ;)
Following the screening, there was a great after party at Bergorf Goodman. The space was completely transformed and the party carried on the new lux Middle East theme from the movie. Drinks were served at the jewelry counters - so fun!

We met Vivienne Tam (second time for Erin), and she was so sweet. Like Erin's written before, she is incredible warm, and she is genuinely excited about her collaboration with HP.

We also met actor Willie Garson, best known as Carrie's gay best friend Stanford Blatch. And yes, that's Thom Filicia from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in the background.

In Theaters: Breaking Upwards

A few weeks ago my friend Mike sent me an email about his friends' film. He said it was a film worth catching and supporting - a true passion project, "weekends here and there" type of shoot with a super low budget. The movie was Breaking Upwards.

I watched the trailer and fell in love. There's something so honest and relatable about the story. The movie is semi-autobiographical, based on a year in the lives of real life couple director/actor Daryl Wein and actress Zoe Lister-Jones. They're so great, so cute and creative. Just watch this promo video they made.

Breaking Upwards is currently playing at IFC Center in NY until Thursday, April 15th. Support NY independent films!

For those in California, the film will be in theaters April 9th Laemmle Sunset 5 in LA and April 16th Lumiere in San Francisco.

iWant Opening Ceremony x Where the Wild Things Are

Oh my god, I'm squealing and giddy over the Opening Ceremony & Spike Jonze Where the Wild Things Are collaboration. The collection includes a range of faux fur pieces for both men and women, inspired by Max’s crew of wild friends including Carol, Judith, K.W., Douglas, and Bull. Furry coats galore!

I think men kind of got jipped on this one. The men's coat on the right is nice, but I'm not sure how I feel about the cream colored piece. It feels a little too costume-y.
These two coats are my absolute favorites from the collection. I love. No, I die. They're both so fun and wearable. If I had to pick one, I think I would gravitate towards the one on the right.

The collection is awesome and limited edition, so naturally prices are up there. The coats start at $575 and the playsuits pictured at the top are selling for $610. Confessions of a Shopaholic Tickets

The first time I saw the trailer for Confessions of a Shopaholic I thought to myself, "That is the dumbest movie ever." Maybe I've seen the trailer too many times or maybe I just can't stay away from bright colors and designer goods, whatever the case I kind of want to see it now.

More than 1,000 movie tickets and screening passes will be given to customers who try on a pair of “Paigeaholic” jeans at Paige Premium Denim or Bloomingdales through Feb. 20, or until supplies last.

Handmade Nation Film Premiere

"A new wave of craft is catching the attention of the nation. It has emerged as a marriage between historical technique, punk, and the DIY (do it yourself) ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism, and art."

Attention New York craftsters, Handmade Nation is premiering in the city this week. In June 2006 director Faythe Levine set out with her one camera crew to document the indie craft movement, visiting 15 cities across the nation. Thursday night the documentary will premiere at the Museum of Art and Design, featuring segments on influential indie craft community members. Following the screening, Faythe Levine will be joined in a post-film panel discussion about the indie craft movement by artist Mandy Greer, and Kate Bingaman-Burt, Handmade Nation typographer.
