Sandy: The Aftermath

Sandy is a messy one.  Clearly she didn't get the memo about picking up after herself.  Hope you all stayed safe/dry last night!  My area in Williamsburg was pretty lucky - everything stayed intact (power, gas, water) except for a brief stint with the internet last night.  Overall, definitely can't complain.  It's day 2 of being under lockdown and I had to go out to get some air - I can only watch the same news broadcasters so many times and eat so many cookies....

Go Watch: Pitch Perfect

Saw this last week at Union Square when it opened up in select theaters and I have to say I LOVED this movie.  I have this paranoia about bedbugs at theaters so in my 2+ years in NYC, I've only seen two movies via Manhattan bound theaters...and this was one of them.   If you're a fan of music, dance, glee (when it was actually good), etc. then you'll like this movie.  For movies, I like mine lighthearted, funny and witty - and Pitch Perfect has all of the above.



Seriously, I laughed so hard every time Rebel Wilson opened her mouth ("Fat Amy") - she is so friggen hilarious!  If you want a good laugh and want to watch something that doesn't take itself too seriously I definitely recommend this movie!

Product Review: SodaStream

For some reason or another I really wanted to try this contraption - so after grabbing dinner with Erin earlier this week, I bolted to my local Bath Bed & Beyond to pick one up.  SodaStream is a carbonation system which lets you add CO2 to regular H20 from the comfort of your own home. Headquartered in Israel, this company sells its gas infusing machines in 43 countries and is big on being green by reducing consumers' carbon footprint. 

Product Review: Clarisonic Mia 2

A few weeks ago, I was walking around 5th Ave when I noticed the Clarisonic Mia 2 on display.  Up until that point I have never heard about the device but based on what my friend told me about it, I made the purchase.  The product has amazing reviews and everyone my friend knew who has one absolutely loves it.  To sum it up, it's a electronic face brush that vibrates and helps remove dirt, makeup, oil and and dead skin. After contemplating for 30 minutes I decided to bite the bullet and pick one up at Sephora.  At $149 (for the Mia 2), it's not the cheapest thing on the market but I ain't getting any younger! I just kept telling myself to consider this as an investment...an investment for my face.

DIY: Waxed TOMS

I've been wanting to wax some of my shoes forever - but never wanted to deal with the mess of melting wax....until I came across a wax in a bar format (no heating/melting required) called Otter Wax. After scanning their blog I noticed a post that showcased The Coveted doing a DIY on a pair of jeans which would also be a great project! If you know me, you know that I love TOMS for their comfort and philanthropy - and since they're canvas, I thought they would be perfect for this project.

Toronto Bound....

I can't believe its Thanksgiving already. I'm still not used to the holiday falling in November vs October but c'est la vie! This year has literally flown by...and I'm looking forward to a full week of nothing! This year, Sugar Rock Catwalk is doing something different - we're all going to Toronto to spend the holiday! It's been a while since we've seen Lani Love so can't wait!

Since we'll be busy showing Lani where we come from, catching up with family and friends and binging on real Chinese food, our posts will likely be a bit on the sparse side next week. Hope you all have an amazing Thanksgiving!

Hope you all had a fun Halloween! I just wish the weather wasn't so crazy...I'm still floored that it snowed so much in October!  Anyways, I'm not the biggest fan of Jimmy Kimmel but this video is just amazing.... enjoy!

MS Paint - Really??

So lately I've been experimenting with MS paint.  Whenever I need a 72 second break from work, I take my trusty two button mouse and draw cartoons of people I know.  Sometimes I literally have to stop myself from laughing out loud by myself at my desk. It makes whatever crap you're dealing with melt away - even if its just for a few moments...Anyways - here's some of the things I've drawn over the past little while.  Each sketch usually follows the same life cycle pattern - I draw, I laugh, I text/email the drawing to everyone in the drawing, everyone laughs, it goes on facebook as someones profile pic...

This is a picture of my flatmates.  I decided they would both look better with different hairstyles. I graciously volunteered to do "A"s hair.

Cookies...and Marshmallows!!

Last weekend, I was chatting with Erin and we decided we should probably be eating healthier than we do, yadda yadda yadda - you know how these things go....and immediately following that conversation, we decided to hit up Fette Sau in Williamsburg for some BBQ (which was sadly very disappointing) and then the grocery store to stockpile butter, sugar and chocolate to make cookies. Way to start off the first hour of a healthier lifestyle...

The base recipe for the cookie comes from the New York Times and can be found here. Supposedly you are supposed to chill the dough for 24 hours before baking - but seriously...who in NY plans that far ahead? I certainly don't. And clearly I have a problem reading instructions....but fear not they still turned out amazing!

What makes this cookie different is actually what's inside (and not part of the original recipe)....marshmallows! My sister get's all the credit for this - since she's the one who originally experimented and told me I had to try it.

After making the cookie dough, you form it into a ball like most cookies, flatten it like a pancake in your hand, and drop in a piece of marshmallow (about 1/4 of one big one).

Next, you wrap the cookie dough around the marshmallow - kind of like making a dumpling...

Bake for 10-12 minutes and you're done. I prefer these particular cookies on the undercooked side - the outside still has a crust but the inside is soft and that marshmallow just melts into everything...the batter makes about 50 cookies depending on the size of your cookie.

The cookie is on the sweeter side - so if you like your cookies less sweet (like me) - you might want to replace the chocolate with peanut butter chips or something not as sweet as chocolate (or use bittersweet chocolate). While you can cut the sugar, it's going to mess up the texture/consistency of the cookie which I don't recommend since that's part of what makes this it so damn good.

Little Black Book: Fashionary

Part sketchbook, part reference material - all Fashionary. This handy book has two parts - the first being a fashion dictionary and the second being a sketch pad. It's designed for quick brainstorming, fast sketching and easy referencing. I saw this on Love at First Blush's blog and thought to myself - I gotta try this out.

The first part of the book is 38 pages jam packed with tons of info including different types of stitches, care instructions, spec sheets, pattern and flat drawings, fabric dictionary, typography and more. Definitely a great resource on the go.

The second section of the book is 130 pages and is the sketchbook portion of the book. This is no ordinary sketchbook though! Each page comes with preprinted croquis which are barely visible and outlined in small dots. You can use the outlines as a guide or just draw freehand since the printed figures are barely noticeable.

About a few months ago - I tried drawing clothes for the first time ever! I ended up getting hung up on drawing the proportions of the people vs the clothing and it took a while to finish. Since each page of the Fashionary has croquis' already in place, I was interested in seeing how things would turn out - here's how I made out.

I started with pencil and just traced the body outline just to see the body form. I ended up sketching on top of the outline and kept going. Each page has three forms on it so you get the most out of each page.

I was actually really surprised at how fast and well this works. I drew three bodies in no time and decided to test the thickness of the paper by going over the drawings in ink. Nothing bled through to the other side which was nice.

Since the ink didn't bleed I ended up coloring things in with marker - which bled through a bit onto the other side. So if you're looking for color options, you might want to opt for lighter mediums. Overall I was amazed at how much time was saved by having the templates as a base to work off of. By not focusing on the proportions of the figure, you can focus more on the clothes you are actually drawing!

Definitely a great and handy little book which I will be using a lot! If you're in the fashion industry or just like doodling or drawing (like me), this is a great tool to have. If you're interested in picking one up (they have one for women and one for men) and can be purchased online here.
