A Transatlantic Move: From New York to London

In case you've wondering where I've been, I sort of fell off the continent and moved countries. I live in London now and the process to get here has been a bit of a whirlwind. I packed up my life and sending the boxes in two different directions. I labelled everything with post-its and it was either red for my parents basement in Canada, yellow to give away or blue for England. After everything was color coded it just became a matter of putting the wheels in motion and saying goodbye.

It was good for me to go through all my belongings because I accumulated a lot over the years and I purged like I've never purged before. I have some sort of weird attachment to things that I own that leads me to be a bit of a hoarder. Every time I tried to purge my closet, I'd end up going to a clothing swap and bringing home just as much as I gave away. Even still, every item I've purchased is associated with memories of things that have happened while wearing an item, the story of how I came to own it or some other sentimental nonsense. I knew I wasn't strong enough to do it alone so I called in reinforcements and had a friend ask me simple questions like, "Erin, do you really need 14 pairs of jeans?" or "How many coats do you think that you can fit in a shared closet?" and I cut back big time. The things that I kept with me are the things I need or love best. The things that I put into storage, I was hopeful l would still love one day when I'm ready to stop exploring.

In the end, I sent a third of my belongings to London since we didn't have any idea where we were going to live or how much space we would have. We just knew that we wouldn't have the beautiful Victorian floor through that we found in Ditmas Park and would have to downsize. I carried a couple suitcases that I lived out of for the first month armed with my best monochromatic casual wear, a few of my more precious clothing items (uh hello, Proenza Schouler skirt), basic toiletries and a few of my favourite spices for cooking. It's funny the things you find important enough to hand carry at the end of the day.

I suppose eight years ago, I went through the same motions of starting again in a new city when I moved to New York City, thankfully this time around I am not alone. Thankfully I now can make this leap holding my husband's hand and know that we face all of the adventures, hardships and learning together. I miss my friends, my apartment and life in Brooklyn, but I am ready to build a new life here. I hit the ground running hard and we found a flat in West London and quickly ran to Ikea to build the obnoxious but affordable furniture to make our home feel like a home.

There are a lot of similarities between England and America, and at times things are so similar that I forget I am in another country. At times, I find myself getting frustrated that things are not the same. I guess it is naive of me to think they would be. Yes, they speak English here in London but it is a different sort of animal. I emphasise all of the wrong syllables, I pronounce letters that shouldn't be pronounced and I feel helpless when it comes to the terminology used to describe even the simplest things. Sometimes I just have to admit that I'm not sure how to do or say certain things and try to explain my way around it.

Things that I did so easily in the past are not done in the same manner so everything takes me a little bit longer to figure out. The first challenge we faced was opening a bank account, where bank after bank they asked for a utility bill or bank statement. Well, you can't exactly provide one when you are new to a country and living in corporate housing can you? When we pointed that out, we were politely told to come back when we have a utility bill. The circles of conversation were slightly maddening. We tried another bank that told us they had such an influx of students, they could meet with us only after another week. Finally in desperation when we went to HSBC, they obliged and used our US mailing address as a workaround to set up our accounts.

I ran into the same situation when I was trying to get a doctor's appointment, where without proof of address, it became impossible. When I finally used a couple pieces of mail to see the doctor, I had to have a nurses appointment to see the doctor and finally a letter in the mail to see the specialist I was hoping to see. By the time the letter from the doctor was due to arrive, I had moved homes and had to try to collect it from the corporate housing office.

Now that I have a bank account and an address, I know life will only get easier, but I only recently started looking in the right direction when crossing the road without having a fear of death. I listen attentively to the subway announcements trying to learn the correct pronunciations of stations. Some of the stations induce giggles (uhmm...Cockfosters?). I laugh a little when I see signs for a "striped zebra crossing", which is a speed bump that people can walk across. I hate to admit it, but I started saying "quite" a little too often for my liking. I've learned that Foxtons (a real estate broker) is the devil, but in the end we used them too. Perhaps I will get better at living life abroad but for now every day is a still a new challenge.

Finding Stillness

This has been a summer of learning for me. A summer of growth and stillness. All my life I always felt like I had to be doing something to be productive. If I wasn't doing something I felt like I wasn't important, I wasn't worthy or I wasn't good enough. These lies I told myself meant that I always keep on going, keep proving myself. And so my wheels kept spinning and I kept finding myself feeling less and less satisfied.

When I first moved to New York City, I found myself having a bad case of FOMO (fear of missing out). I wanted to know what was going on, where to be, what to eat, what to listen to and always have the option to say no. Not that I said no often. I found myself running myself ragged to try to get to two or three events in a night, just to feel like I wasn't missing out on anything. I am realizing that while none of this is harmful it wasn't doing me any good either. At the end of the day, keeping up created a lot of mind clutter and noise to have to filter through. If you're like me and have an overflowing inbox that you never get to, you know my pain.

Until recently I had very little opportunity to stop and take a breath. I just worked. I worked to survive, to stay legal, to stay in this city. I felt a pressure to keep up with a life that wasn't necessarily sustainable. A life that I saw through bleary eyes and an immune system that started to rebel on me. After a struggle with chronic insomnia I am learning to take care of myself again.

As I get older and hopefully wiser, I am starting to say no to things that I don't  need to do in order to make room for the things that I actually want to do. I am still learning to actively create space for myself.  I want to make room in my life for creativity and the simple joys in life. Thanks to a loving and supportive husband, I am creating space. I am indulging in the luxury of time.

I am not going to beat myself up for not doing as much I want to get done each day, for not getting to all the things I thought I'd do like drawing everyday or reading my booklist or volunteering. I am going to give myself a break that my apartment doesn't look like how I want it to and I have dirty dishes in the sink. I am going to enjoy the moments and the days and savor them. I am going to learn that it's okay to rest and find my own thoughts again. I am going to lie on the beach on a Tuesday and feel so lucky that I have this freedom.

Now Wearing...

When I first spotted this dress in a vintage shop in Portland last year, I was really excited to have found not only an adorable dress with apples and stars galore, but the perfect Fourth of July Dress. So this year, I pulled it out of the closet with glee to get my red, white and blue look just right to celebrate the day. With a homemade blueberry pie in tote, I made my way to a friend's BBQ.

Congrats Erin =]

I just wanted to take some time to say congrats to one of my all time best friends and absolute favorite peeps and in this world - Erin, who got hitched this past weekend!  It was a beautiful, relaxing and all around perfect wedding (and of course her dress was absolutely stunning). Wish you and Michael all the best in your new life together!

Lani flew in from Chi-town too so we had a SRC reunion as well =]

Erin will be out and about for the next little while taking care of some odds and ends (like her honeymoon for example) but we'll still try to keep you up to date on what's going on around the city.

Sample sales this week are pretty non-existent due to the 4th of July holiday coming up.  Hope you all have an amazing week!

Super Easy Healthy Banana Oat Cookies

2013-03-23 19.09.54
Cookies have been food group that I've had to severely reduce since I began cutting gluten, dairy and eggs out of my life. Seriously, I think countless friends have told me that I've lost a lot of weight, and it's not that I am eating less, but I am eating less in terms of baked goods. When I can get it though, I've always appreciated Babycakes Bakery's cupcake tops and cookie sandwiches as well as Enjoy Life's Snickerdoodles in the grocery aisle.

So when a friend told me at a recent get together that we were going to make sugar free, butter free, egg free, gluten free cookies, I had my doubts. Have you ever made a recipe from Pinterest? I guess there is always a first time for everything. I tried on 2 occasions with slightly different sets of ingredients and quickly learned what works best. These aren't cookies in the traditional sense, they are a bit more like dessert bars, but still tasty nonetheless.
--
Tips:
*Use very ripe bananas, the more brown spots the better.
*Use quick oats. You can use gluten-free rolled oats, but quick oats works so much better. Since I'm not celiac, and I couldn't find GF quick oats, I just used regular quick oats, but they exist :)
*Mini chocolate chips work better than the chunks
*Not necessary but if you want a bit of a richer flavor, add a teaspoon and a half of melted coconut oil to your batter. You won't be sorry.

Pretty much the base recipe goes:
2 bananas
1 cup of quick oats

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a cookie sheet (don't skimp or your cookies will get stuck). Mash the ingredients together and add any mix-ins. Spoon tablespoons of your mixture onto your cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes until firm and lightly browned on the edges.

DIY: Lady Mary Crawley Inspired Wedding Tiara

downton-abby-wedding-inspiration-1
There is no bones about it, I am a huge Downton Abbey fan. Ever since I first entered the world of the Crawley's I have admired the style and poise of all of the "Lady's". Naturally when their weddings aired earlier this year for all of the world to see, I couldn't resist admiring Lady Mary's bejeweled tiara that weighed in at 45 carats and cost about $200,000. Being a bride on a budget, that tiara was most definitely out of my price range, however I could not shake the lovely laurels from my head. Thankfully I happened to stumble upon this laurel brooch while browsing eBay and I found myself an affordable solution. I ended up ordering 2 brooches and a pack of 10x5 Navettes on eBay, buying myself a comb in a craft store and some super powerful glue (E6000) and seeing what I could do with a little bit of grosgrain. All in all, I think I spent under $20 for my own laurel wedding tiara. While it's not as large or bold as Lady Mary Crawley's I think I still get to have a little touch of Downton on my special day.

The pieces I ordered on eBay were actually brooches, so the first thing I did was snap off the backing by pushing in on the brooch pin and pulling back and forth a couple of times.

Erin Style Diary (2)
It's been a while since I've posted an outfit but since it was Fashion Week, I got to borrow a couple pieces from my friends at AM:PR to create my look. It was the day after the snowstorm and honestly I didn't know how I was going to stay warm and dry so I decided to layer up and wear rubber boots because nothing can make me more miserable quicker than cold wet feet.

Love and Other Distractions

So I know that for the past few months I have been more than a little M.I.A. and honestly the past year has been a growing year from me full of many ups as well as downs. I think I've grown a lot, experienced a lot and been stretched a lot beyond my comfort level. As I mentioned before, I experienced the new normal - being laid off and then the struggle of searching for just the right opportunity. The exhaustion of "being on" all the time and putting out my feelers in every direction. The fear of having to give up my entire way of life and move cities. The challenge of making the tough but right decisions when more than one opportunity came my way. Adjusting to a new job and everything that comes with it.

And somehow in the midst of all this chaos this past year I learned what falling in love was all about. I never shared until now but my life that I knew changed once more and I am so happy it did. I have been distracted because I am now engaged to a far better man than I could've dreamed up.

The sun was shining this past Sunday and it was the perfect time for me to head up to The Met Museum for one of my rare trips to the Upper East side to see some art and head to the rooftop for one of NYC's best views. Fall is definitely in the air and it is without a doubt one of my favorite seasons. Time to pull out the jeans and booties and enjoy the glorious day.

As Jeff mentioned this exhibit is awesome and it really is the type of interactive art that I love. I sacrificed my phone screen and poked a little snag in my jeans but I still enjoyed it and the reflective surfaces made for some photographic fun! Click after the jump to see what I'm wearing, more photos and where I've been.

So the challenge given to me was to create an outfit inspired by the newest member of the HTC family, the Droid Incredible 4G LTE for a chance to win one of my very own.  Since I felt up to the challenge this is my best Droid Incredible inspired look.

Recently, I have had the opportunity to test each of the Incredible models and I loved the sleek new re-design.  For my outfit, I am showing off my personal style evolution with a great new haircut that I received at the Paul LaBrecque Salon during the HTC Incredible Launch Event a few weeks ago.

Since my friend and talented photographer, James S. Rand, moved to Chicago, I haven't been able to get as many daily style photos as I would like but here is one of me that got snapped by Ady from Trends 360 while I was walking around in my neighborhood wearing mostly black and white with a pop of yellow.

Summer is here and whenever the weather gets really hot I turn to wovens that seem to let air circulate without sticking to me as much as knits.  Since the evenings still tend to get a bit chilly, I tied a cardigan to my purse strap for when I really need it.

If you're mixing prints - subtle stripes paired back to florals are  an easy combination.  I tried to tie my outfit together by picking up on accent colors in my skirt and wearing accessories in similar colors.

When I first saw this Marni x H&M silky cardigan in the ad campaign I knew I had to have it.  The dot print combined with 2-tone textured knit sleeves and back gave it a perfectly retro librarian sort of feel that I loved so I was super excited when I managed to score it at the 34th Street location early on the day of the launch.  While I never managed to snag those delightfully chunky necklaces I found a bracelet that I previously fashioned into a necklace that did the trick.

I've probably said this before but a bold pop of color is all you need to jolt you awake in the morning.  I used to be afraid of color when I was younger and I lived in black and navy.  As my confidence grew with maturity I realized that I had nothing to be afraid of and now I embrace color.  My outfit is a little bit scuba inspired in the color selection - bright yellow paired with vivid aqua and royal blue is one of my favorite color combinations lately.

It's been a while since I posted an outfit as my dear friend and photographer extraordinaire James S. Rand has moved away from NYC.  Luckily for me this past weekend, Jeff helped me out by grabbing a few shots of my outfit.  Today I combined some of my old favorites for a layered look that is for most part comfortable.  I discovered a new use for my lace tee shirt to provide a modesty piece that can be worn with low cut tops - previously I only tried wearing the lace tee on top of tanks.  I also took the time to attempt a galaxy manicure after being inspired by something I saw on Pinterest.

It's funny to build an entire outfit around a bag, but that is what I did. I was super excited about my new Rebecca Minkoff purse that the lovely team at RM sent me just before the holidays.  Since the color is a soft Barbie pink with a subtle pearlized finish it is the perfect gateway into Spring dressing.  Although it's pink, it almost feels like a neutral and I decided to use pastels to uplift my otherwise dark world of winter dressing.  It was the first time I rocked a full size Minkoff MAC and found that my 2 cell phones, huge wallet, basic beauty products, glasses and Nook were all able to fit with ease.

When it comes to print on print action I'm a fan as long as the color families are in the same realm I think it works so today I combined a ditzy print dress with a pair of bold leggings and captured some of those color pops in my bright necklace and socks.

As for my hair, I've wanted a change for a long time and I've been thinking of getting an undercut...but the weather outside is so cold it makes me think if I lose my hair I'll find myself in cold regret.  I decided to sort of do an quick look inspired by undercuts by twisting my hair and using mini clips to hold it in place.  While it is far from perfect - note the errant strand twisting in the back - it was fun to change things up for a day.
