NYFW Spring 2011: Simon Spurr

While I was invited to attend the Simon Spurr show, thanks to Gmail's attempt to weed out our spam, my invite got caught in our junk mail folder and I didn't notice it until after the fact. I was definitely a bit bummed out since he was one of the finalists for the 2010 CFDA's Swarovski Award for Menswear and I'm a fan of both Spurr's self entitled line and SPURR (his more casual/edgier line) - oh well...c'est la vie. Since I wasn't able to attend, I thought I'd do a recap of the spring line anyways. Damn you Gmail!!!

Spurr's collection incorporated a polished European aesthetic with a cool classy vibe - similar to his Fall 2010 collection. The pieces are clean-cut, non-fussy and wearable with impeccable tailoring. Three piece suits, slim fitting pants, leathers, great outerwear and denim were plentiful and not one tunic was in sight!

Similar to other spring collections, neutral earthy tones led the way which gave way to some to soft pinks, followed by grays and black.

Stripes, checkers and prints also made their way into a few of the items which gave a geometric feel and softened the look of some of the suits. Whenever you add a pattern or print to a suit (which by the way doesn't suit everyone - no pun intended), it reduces the formality of the garment which isn't always a bad thing.
Spurr varied some of his pinstripe suits which I thought was great. The suit on the left combines both horizontal and vertical stripes (pants/vest: horizontal, blazer: vertical) which gave a more architectual feel to the garment. The suit on the right incorporated different sized stripes with a chunkier stripe on top. Overall, I thought Spurr's take on the pinstripe was interesting and fun and it's something I've never seen before which was refreshing.
