DIY: Oh Holey Tee

So I bought this thin T-Shirt from Free People a while ago to use as a layering tee. I loved the slightly pastel neon shade and the softness. But the instant I washed it it started falling apart! there were almost 13 little tiny holes all over the place after the first wash! Talk about poor quality. And after attempting to sew and close the holes, I realized it was best to let the tee be what it always wanted to be. Anyways, I remembered a photo from an old Teen Vogue where the model was wearing an extremely holey tee under a cocktail dress with luxe jewelry on top and wondered if I could achieve the same effect. Destruction for creation?

I started by making more holes with a seam ripper. I ripped horizontally across the tee to create bigger holes and vertically to create skinnier runs. You start the runs by pulling threads in towards the hole, the when it starts you stretch the fabric up and away from the hole to help it grow in length to wherever you want it.

Sometimes if you want bigger stretched out holes you can poke your fingers through some of the runs for a varied effect. Repeat many times. But make sure you try on the tee occasionally so you can avoid making holes in spots that would be too Mean Girls.

Voila, a holey tee I can be proud to call my own ;) It takes alot of time and patience surprisingly to get this right but it's kinda therapeutic as you watch a movie or listen to music.

haha sorry to scare you Julia, esp on your first visit! maybe I should have shown the finished product first? I was just trying to show that I was stretching out the tee with one hand while trying to take pics with the other! It was a little awkward >_< but definitely not an unfortunate accident!

What a great idea for all those lesser quality tees. And there is no way getting around those holes, I've tried too!
