DIY: Waxed TOMS

I've been wanting to wax some of my shoes forever - but never wanted to deal with the mess of melting wax....until I came across a wax in a bar format (no heating/melting required) called Otter Wax. After scanning their blog I noticed a post that showcased The Coveted doing a DIY on a pair of jeans which would also be a great project! (click here to check out the video if you're interested in trying this out on a pair of jeans)

If you know me, you know that I love TOMS for their comfort and philanthropy - and since they're canvas, I thought they would be perfect for this project.

For this DIY here's what you'll need:

Item of clothing/accessory/shoes that you want to wax (canvas/denim would work best in my opinion)
Bar of fabric wax (I used Otter Wax which requires no melting/heating)
About 20 minutes

To start, I brushed off any dirt/lint/dust from the canvas surface before applying the wax. Next, I began applying the wax to the shoe. I put my hand inside the shoe and made a fist to provide a hard surface to rub the wax in.

The wax itself is really firm so it doesn't crumble or crack when you're applying it which is nice. Since the shoe has quite a few seams and curves, I used short, firm, strokes to apply the wax. I went over each area a few times to ensure adequate coverage. Once you apply the wax, you'll notice the area darken - signalling that the wax has been applied to that area.

Some of the wax will build up at seams when you're rubbing it into the material so I ended up going back and smoothing out/removing the excess wax with my finger. If you'd rather not get the wax on your hands, you can use a toothpick to remove the excess.

Keep going and before you know it, you're done!

I couldn't believe how quick and easy the process was so I decided to do a second pair. When applying the wax, just note that it's a good idea to take your item outside or into a well lit area once you're done so you can spot any inconsistencies in your application and touch up accordingly.

The very last step is keep your shoes in a cool/dry place to let the wax absorb fully into the fabric for 24 hours. Any leftover wax can be used for future touchups or another project.

Cost: Budget friendly - the wax will set you back about $10/bar (one bar can probably cover 3-4 pairs of TOMS - depending on how big your feet are)

It's funny to build an entire outfit around a bag, but that is what I did. I was super excited about my new Rebecca Minkoff purse that the lovely team at RM sent me just before the holidays. Since the color is a soft Barbie pink with a subtle pearlized finish it is the perfect gateway into Spring dressing. Although it's pink, it almost feels like a neutral and I decided to use pastels to uplift my otherwise dark world of winter dressing. It was the first time I rocked a full size Minkoff MAC and found that my 2 cell phones, huge wallet, basic beauty products, glasses and Nook were all able to fit with ease.

Runway Review: Versace Couture Spring 2012

Versace Couture for Spring 2012 embodies what Donatella does best - glamour, drama and a second skin fit like no other. The dresses are almost painted on some of the bodies of the models while futuristic, structural elements including slashes of metallic beading and architectural arches extend from the shoulders, hips and bust to emphasize the woman's body.

The overall effect is strong as a warrior but always 100% a woman. I love the contrast of the delicate lace panels with the fitted corset-like construction. As for colors while the vast majority of the collection was in dove grey - bold yellow, gold, acid green and vermillion found their way to make some noise. While the collection was absent of any signature prints the play of texture and silhouette seemed to be the most powerful message. Sheer panelling and thigh high slits are also noteworthy trends.

Fall 2012 Trends: Metal Plated Shoes

I know winter has barely begun, but as I was perusing GQ's 100 Best Pairs from Fashion Week, I noticed quite a few pairs featuring metal for Fall 2012. Classic silhouettes paired with chunkier hardware accents provide for an edgier take on modern footwear.

From Costume National, to Louis Vuitton, to Salvatore Ferragamo, to YSL - there were plenty of options which were showcased down the runways.

When it comes to print on print action I'm a fan as long as the color families are in the same realm I think it works so today I combined a ditzy print dress with a pair of bold leggings and captured some of those color pops in my bright necklace and socks.

As for my hair, I've wanted a change for a long time and I've been thinking of getting an undercut...but the weather outside is so cold it makes me think if I lose my hair I'll find myself in cold regret. I decided to sort of do an quick look inspired by undercuts by twisting my hair and using mini clips to hold it in place. While it is far from perfect - note the errant strand twisting in the back - it was fun to change things up for a day.

Runway Review: Dior Couture Spring 2012

The house of Dior still lives with or without the scandal that is John Galliano and in his second couture collection for the house Bill Gaytten has done a marvelous job of capturing the spirit of Dior with so many references to the past without being stuck there. Classic Dior silhouettes that make a woman feel like a woman – like the New Look of 1947 are in abundance but they are made fresh again being whipped together in translucent fabrics. It’s almost like you’re have X-ray vision into something that from a glance should be very lady-like and the effect is quite provocative.

One of my favorite pieces is actually this tucked sheath on the very right that almost looks like pattern drafting coming to life with it’s almost muslin color and bold pick stitches. I guess seeing the art of patternmaking dissected is very appealing to me. As for color palette the collection was predominantly black, white and nude with a few pops of red and violet. Although monochromatic and without pattern I thought it was the best possible showcase for what Gaytten was trying to achieve. Bravo for a collection well done.

Victoria Beckham is one of those rare celebrities that made a smooth transition from being a world famous singer into a legitimate and respected designer. Season after season her sleek and modern dresses embrace a sense of luxury and empowerment that women hunger for. She is soon to launch a diffusion line called Victoria by Victoria Beckham to be revealed in a full short film next Monday along with a window display at Harvey Nichols. And unfortunately, although the line is definitely more affordable than her namesake collection, dresses are still priced between £500 and £800 (which translates to $780-$1248 USD). From this 20 second teaser I get a sense of playful pops of color, silhouettes that are more breezy and bold graphics.

Just a few weeks ago I finally upgraded to the latest and greatest iPhone, the 4S. With a new phone came a bunch of new apps, including Instagram. Wow, I'm kind of addicted. I love how easy it is to share to Facebook and Twitter, and while a bit cheesy, I do enjoy playing with the filters. I also enjoy browsing my Instagram feed, super visual and minimal reading. It's a nice way to keep in touch with friends around the world and follow favorite designers and fashion bloggers.

You can take the girl out of New York, but you can't take the wedged booties out of her closet. My Style Diary has been quite the same without James S. Rand in my life. The exciting news is that he's Chicago-bound! I can't wait for us to collaborate again.

I've also made a couple of great new friends here - Owen and Corey, and we had a small shoot the other weekend which was super fun. Here's a preview; I'll be sharing the rest pictures soon. With their help, I hope to get back into personal style blogging again.

Golden Globes at Style Coalition Lounge with Dove

Just last week I was at the Style Coalition Lounge dressed up with some of my favorite blogger friends and watching the Golden Globes thanks to Dove. We got to treat ourselves to mini hair touch-ups throughout the night and to make things interesting we all filled out a ballot guessing who we thought would take home the awards. Since I don't have cable, I don't watch too much TV so my guesses were at times wildly off save for my guess for Downton Abbey (on my must see list) and Modern Family (how could you not love it?).

While having my hair touch-up the stylist mixed it up by giving my super cute mini braids and using Dove Style Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum to nourish my hair, prevent static and for light styling without any weight or sticky feel. I loved the light smell (slightly reminds me of apples) and the fact that I am treating my hair even though it doesn't feel like I am using product.

I had a blast tweeting the night away while sipping cocktails and snacking on delicious appetizers. One of my fave moments of the night was when the dessert version of Golden Globes were brought out.

As for the clothes, they were really the reason I watched the show and I noticed headbands on both Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams looking juvenile on one and adorable on the latter. Another trend I noticed was the strong prevalence of blush on the red carpet which is not likely to go away anytime soon.

One of the predominant trends of the evening was the Fishtail dress it was all over the red carpet. While some of the celebrities pulled off this trend looking amazing, there are others that I am not so sure made it happen.
Bérénice Bejo, in Gucci, with Chopard jewels and a Swarovski clutch looks classically movie star beautiful in her vibrant cobalt blue number. Kate Beckinsale looked lovely in her blush Roberto Cavalli.

Sofia Vergara was a knockout in peacock Vera Wang with Harry Winston. The fit and flare shape suited her voluptuous figure perfectly

Tilda Swinton was a stunner in Haider Ackermann's tuxedo dress with Fred Leighton and Pomellato jewels. (More on this below)

I did not like Reese Witherspoon fire engine red Zac Posen - the Vampy look conflicts with her image and when paired with the big hair had her coming off as trying too hard.

I was on the fence about Rooney Mara in her sultry black Nina Ricci - while the bodice was definitely sexy, the stiff skirt didn't quite look like it belonged on the same dress and just looked kind of awkward.

One of the newest things I saw on the red carpet was a nod to the 1930s in terms of heavy Art Deco influences in gilded geometric shapes.

Shailene Woodley looks lovely in her fishtail in Marchesa with the shimmering beading that accentuated her silhouette.

Salma Hayek with the gilded bodice by Gucci looks every bit the glamorous movie starlet that she is.

Nicole Kidman her gold studded Versace with Fred Leighton jewels never looked taller or more powerful.

Claire Danes in her black and white J. Mendel dress with Bulgari jewels looks sophisticated and grown-up - a long cry from her awkward youth on My-So-Called-Life (how I loved that show).

As for my faves no one did it better than these ladies - sophisticated, unique and unforgettable.

Dianna Agron in Giles with Fred Leighton totally channels Katniss Everdeen, the Girl on Fire (from Hunger Games). While some said swans were so last year, can anyone really argue with the fact that her look stood out or that she looks beautiful without being trashy? Wish I could say the same for her fellow Glee co-star Lea Michelle who looked like she was trying to channel Halle Berry from years gone by.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu with Fred Leighton took a risk by wearing a textured velvet gown with sleeves. It could have been potentially disastrous but fortunately the shape of the dress is simple and the clean lines show off her svelte shape in a non-obtrusive way.

Emma Stone in head to toe Lanvin spiced up her pretty 2-tone dress with her own touch - the eagle belt adds life and personality in a way that works perfectly for the red carpet while being true to herself.

Angelina Jolie is striking in her perfectly form fitted 2-tone Atelier Versace dress with Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Never thought that matching lipstick and accessories to your dress would look so good - maybe it works because the bold red is in small doses.

My personal favorite of the night had to go to Evan Rachel Wood in Gucci Premiere with Fred Leighton jewels. The dress in the shimmering peacock feathers that transform into sequins was gorgeous, perfectly fitted and complimented the actresses coloring perfectly.

Last but not least I know I mentioned Tilda Swinton before but she really looks stunning and marches to the beat of her own drum combining feminine and masculine elements that some commented reminded them of David Bowie.

First Look: doo.ri for Macy's

Jason Wu is not the only designer with a hot upcoming collaboration next month. Designer Doo-Ri Chung is collaborating with Macy's is collaborating as part of their "Impulse" limited-edition collaborations, following in the footsteps of esteemed designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Giambattista Vali and Matthew Williamson.

Chung's collection launches exclusively at Macy's on February 15, 2012 and features classic trench coats, jersey dresses and separates priced between $39 and $159. I am loving the bold graphic brushstroke prints, the modern clean silhouettes and the relaxed sense of luxury that is a hallmark of doo.ri style. My faves are without a doubt the jersey pieces that Chung does best - the LBD and the empire waisted maxi below are perfection!

The Odd Slipper Soiree

Last night I dropped by the Little Shoe Store in the East Village - the perfect setting for the launch event of online boutique The Odd Slipper. I've mentioned before that The Odd Slipper specializes in shoes for ladies with small feet - sizes 3-5.5 to be exact. Since I am a true size 5 I jumped at the opportunity to try shoes that are actually in my size! Too many times have I been excited to find an adorable pair of shoes at just the right price only to discover that my size isn’t even manufactured anymore. Last night however for the first time ever I did not even know where to look first! Rows upon row of perfectly tiny shoes in all sorts of amazing styles! What a relief to not be sent to the children’s section to shop (true story).

Guests mingled munching on macarons and cookies that smelled delicious (I’ve recently gone gluten & dairy-free) by Spot Dessert Bar and cocktails by Cointreau.

With so many petite shoes to look for, I actually found shoes that were too small for my feet - which never happens! Peep some of my fave styles – from rugged buckle boots to spikey stilettos to glittering peep toe heels. Don’t wait for Prince Charming or feel like an ugly stepsister, find a lovely shoe or few that fits at last!

When I saw these Versace for H&M pants I just had to snag them - the bright hot colors kinda scream at you but in the best kind of way. I tried to tone things down by keeping the rest of my outfit rather low-key save for a fun necklace and plaid shoes. Thought the shoes might be fun for picking up the yellow in the jeans and I never really seem to wear them although I do love the way the make me think of Cher Horowitz's first day of school outfit in Clueless.

Footy superstar David Beckham teamed up with H&M to launch a bodywear line for men. Stopped by Eva last night to see what they had in store for their warehouse sale. Eva is always a fun place to visit and discover new contemporary and experimental designers who are anything but mainstream. The clothes and accessories are always interesting and unique. The sale was predominantly located in the back of the store with 1 rack of super discounts and a couple other racks with lesser discounts. There was also a large fur selection that included a wide assortment from Lynx to Mongolian lamb, although I would wait this out as it’s going to be marked down again come January 19th. The fur is still quite expensive but marked down significantly from the original ticketed price – but it is fur afterall.

As for the super discount rack it included a lot of sequin and drapey jersey. This mesh sequin vest was marked down to $60 from $102. The jersey swing vest is marked down to $66 from $185. The glittering sequin jacket is now $75 (was $149) while the scoop back high-low sequin dress is $90 (from $180)

Some items at a lesser discount include items by Moonspoon Saloon which are about 15-20% off retail although I did spot a printed velour dress that was marked 50% off at $120 (from $240).

While the sale selection isn't the largest, the shopping experience was pleasant, staffers friendly and you'll find clothing that you wouldn't likely find elsewhere.

Sample Sale Report: All Saints

When I heard that All Saints was having their very first Warehouse Sale I excitedly ran off to Soho to scope out the scene. I arrived just after 7pm and although there was no line to enter or leave the sale or no coat check, the line to checkout was out of control.

The upstairs had all the men's clothing and check out lines while the downstairs had all the shoes and womenswear. The sale had a feeling of being kind of picked over even though the racks were still full. Certain styles that didn't perform at retail were available in multiples but a lot of the more desirable styles were one-off type pieces without much hope of finding sizes. I overheard a girl tell her friend, "Why are there nothing but size 16's in here?". As for my brief searching I did spot various sizes from 6-12. Remember All Saints uses UK sizing, so you'll definitely have to remember to size up - a UK 10 is a US 6. Everything is 70% the original retail price that has been ticketed to the garment.

The most organized areas at the sale appeared to be the shoe section and the denim section as each had a staffer on hand ready to help pull sizes. Unfortunately the rest of the sale was just a free for all. Shoppers though for most part seemed pretty relaxed and not overly eager to push their way around.

There were plenty of trench coats. A tangle of tank tops were marked down to $12 each.

The multi beaded tank top was marked 70% off $145 (which is $43.50). Theere were quite a few of the bubble hem beaded dress which was 70% off $580 (which is $174).

The chunky knitted sweater was 70% off $270 (which is $84, although the price tag listed $81), the jean shorts/skirts were 70% off either $65-85 (which translates to about $20-25 - making it the cheapest thing at the sale).

For this sale I wouldn't go out of my way, it's a bit chaotic and unless you're in the mood to dig you're not likely to come up with much although despite it all there are still some very cute pieces left in the mix.

January truly is the best time of year to get retail bargains and online shopping makes it even easier to snag the style you love at a fraction of a price. This morning as I groggily tried to wake up in bed by skimming emails on my phone I saw that Nine West was now up to 70% off! While I brushed my teeth I continued to skim through the styles and started making a cart so big that I seriously had to weed out my pickings - afterall even if shoes are a great price, real estate in my closet is rare!

Here are a few of my fave bargains to snag:

Pinktop $51.60 - Very reminiscent of the style of my beloved Camilla Skovgaard's styling with the jagged traction soles but in a simple enough shape to knot scream "Knock-Off" - even if there are several very similar styles.

TheGhost $44.70 - Loved this very vintage looking collection from supermodel/singer Karen Elson. These peep-toe shoes are just about perfect, unfortunately when my browsing turned to purchasing, they ran out of my size before I could order them.

Nyoko $54.40 - I love a good winter bootie, especially the lace up ones and throw them on with everything from sweatpants to dresses. This particular pair is really cute in the off kilter green color with faux shearling trim.

Layla $44.70 - Did you love the look of the Giles Deacon collection but forgot to snag a pair? Most of the collection is still available although sizes may vary in availability across styles. This pair of buckle ankle boots would look great with skinny jeans.

DIY: Basic Wedding Veil - Under $10

I recently posted about how to DIY a Birdcage Wedding Veil since my bridesmaid duties recently put my crafting skills into work. I had no idea that wedding veils were so expensive and we ended up making one for under $10 - the tulle was about $7 on sale and the comb was about $1.50. It was fairly easy and much faster than I anticipated so it’s perfect for those Brides-to-be’s on a budget! Since my friend the bride-to-be wanted a classic wedding veil for the ceremony and a birdcage veil for the reception we experimented with tulle until we got exactly the right proportions she was looking for. Please note that this veil was not made to cover the face.

Materials:
2 yards soft tulle (I used 96” wide tulle so I would have a lot to play with but we trimmed it down a lot)
Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter and board
Ruler
1 Comb
Needle and Thread
Decorative Touches (Flower/Ribbon)

Compared to the Birdcage Veil DIY, the classic veil is a lot simpler in terms of construction although you could make it as fancy as you want by hemming the edges, adding trim lace or using craft glue to apply rhinestones or flat back pearls. Since my friend wanted a really simple look we left the edge raw. This means that you must cut really cleanly with very sharp scissors and a steady hand.

If you are able to gently steam out the fabric before you begin it will make it easier to control and accurately cut the fabric (since tulle may melt, I did not apply the iron directly on the fabric just held it gently over as I hit the steam button).

Fold the tulle into quarters. Cut out a soft oval shape. My oval was about 59”x54” to create a double layered veil that comes to waist level.

Unfold the oval and trim away any jagged edges and soften out the shape.

Fold the oval leaving desired space between the two layers. The difference between the 2 edges was about 7” on the veil I created.

Using a needle and thread make a loose, even running stitch through the entire side of the folded edge of the oval.

Softly gather up the tulle until it is about the width of the comb. Evenly distribute the tulle along the edge of the tulle before securing.

If you like you can cover the comb in advance with ribbon by wrapping it around the metal. For our purposes I just secured the tulle to the comb using needle and thread.
At this point you can add whatever fabric flowers or decorative touches onto the comb as desired. Since my friend’s wedding decorations are not yet finalized we left off the decorations and kept things simple.

Ta Da! A very simple classic wedding veil that cost under $10 to make.

After seeing last week's teaser images pop up all over the internet, I was more excited than ever to have a look at what all 53 pieces of the Jason Wu for Target collection would look like. Glad to say that my anticipation was not without reason. The collaboration is simultaneously classic, modern and charming. The pieces look like a welcome addition to any woman's wardrobe and they look more expensive than the under $60 price tag they are retailing for

DIY Birdcage Wedding Veil

So one of my closest friends is getting married next year and since I am probably the most craft-y person in her bridal party I volunteered my services to help her make 2 DIY projects – 1st the Birdcage Veil, 2nd a more traditional tulle veil. Since I’ve never made any veil before I looked at OnceWed.com for basic directions and made a couple of modifications as I went.

Materials:

1/2 yard of 9” wide Russian Veiling – You can buy this on Etsy or at specialty fabric stores like Mood

1 sheet of felt (cut into 2 4”x4” squares) – we used a navy blue to be her “something blue”

Needle & Thread

2 Small Hat Combs – Purchased from Etsy

Scissors

Fabric Glue

Measuring Tape

Silk Flowers and anything else you might want to add

The first thing I did was cut 2 hearts out of the 4”x4” squares of felt that are the same shape. 1 will serve as extra stability and to cover up any unattractive stitches later on.

Cut a 14” piece of the veil (you can add an inch or 2 for fullness). Cut the veiling right above the little knots where the “X” of the veiling comes together.

With a needle make a running stitch through one of the cut ends of the veiling and secure to the felt.

Repeat on the other side.

You can make a running stitch through the finished upper edge of the veil to gather in the fabric and tack the edge to the felt heart. Place the heart on your head in the mirror to determine if you like the positioning of the veiling and re-distribute and add more tacks as necessary.

On the other felt heart secure the hat combs with needle and thread. I angled them to help ensure they will stay in place on the big day. Put this aside for the time being.

We found our flowers at Walmart and they were slightly too big so we removed some of the petals to make them the desired size.

Arrange the flowers on the veil and pin them in place. Make sure you try it on to make sure they are in the ideal location. Using needle and thread or fabric glue you can secure the flowers into place. I personally felt safer using needle and thread to make sure it wouldn’t easily come apart. Using fabric glue or needle and thread attach the other heart that has the combs attached into place.

Voila! Check out the finished product. We may add some additional accent flowers as the big day approaches and the wedding décor has been nailed down but for now we kept it simple.

Before the holiday break, I went to my company's holiday party at Willis Tower, formerly known at the Sears Tower. I was excited to step foot in one of the world's tallest buildings and celebrate with my coworkers.

I dressed for the occasion with an Aqua dress I picked up from Buffalo Exchange a few months ago. I generally don't like satin dresses because the shine can add a few pounds, but I was attracted to the shape and use of hot pink and cobalt blue. And in the spirit of being festive, I wore a big red bow from Forever 21 and my biggest (and favorite) cocktail ring from Sorrelli.

Because I suffer from extreme klutziness, I sprained my ankle the day before the holiday party, slipping on wet floors on the walk to work. It all worked out though. If it hadn't been for the sprained ankle, I probably would have worn pumps and not realized how much I love my new Dieppa Restrepo oxfords. I picked these up earlier this month at sample sale hosted by a handful of Brooklyn designers. This patent pair is not as comfortable as the other pairs by Dieppa Restrepo, but compared to heels, they're wonderful.

DIY: Painting Furniture

Home decor is not really something I ever paid much attention to. When it comes to clothes I have no problems dressing myself or knowing what works and what doesn't but when it comes to the home I have really little experience. My parents decorated my room when I was a child and I never changed it. When I moved to New York, my previous roommate had an amazing knack making a room look warm, inviting and comfortable. My current bedroom is actually the first room I ever bought furniture for and for a long time all I had was a mattress, a desk and a chair. After she moved out of the apartment, things kind of started becoming much less cute as I had new roommates and we all had different odds and ends that didn't quite go together. The homey feeling that I had taken for granted was gone - I was determined to make my home home again.

The piece of furniture that started it all was the dining room table. I had bought it off Craigslist and it was painted grey, but the finish wasn't in the greatest shape and the lady I purchased the table from ended up giving me the leftover paint so I could fix it. I ended up looking up a little bit about furniture painting and decided it would be my next project. Fixing up the table led me to paint the chairs and I keep on painting and still have more painting left to do - guess you can't redo an apartment overnight and even though it's hard work it's been rewarding and kind of addictive.

One of the first things I learned about painting furniture is that if you are painting un-finished wood (without a shiny finish) like the Ikea chairs I had inherited a primer is not necessary. However, if you do end up re-painting furniture you can buy an oil based primer to use as a base or a self priming paint.

Next, I removed any parts of the furniture that would be easier if it wasn't in the way of paint. I removed handles and seats using a screwdriver.

Make sure that your furniture is clean and dry. I scrubbed the table with soap and water and wiped everything down with rubbing alcohol to remove any trace of oil.

Using a fine grit sanding block I gave everything a light sanding to build up a grit on the surface so the paint sticks better. Make sure you wear a dust mask for this part to avoid breathing in any harmful carcinogens that may be in the paint. Wipe off any excess dust using a tack cloth or damp paper towel/rag.

Using a water based paint and good quality brush (to prevent streaks and bristles falling out into your hard work) I followed the paint directions and added one layer of paint at a time, letting dry and sanding lightly in between to create a smooth surface.

Finally, I used 2 coats of Minwax Poly Acrylic in clear to make sure that my paint job especially in heavy use objects like the dining room table would stay in place for a long time and not stick to any dishes or objects placed on top.

Although everything was dry to the touch within a few hours, to make sure your paint job lasts make sure you don't put anything on top of your surfaces for at least 48 hours or preferably 5 days to make sure everything is completely dry and set.

Since my table was grey, I decided to use Classic Burgundy for the chairs as a bit of a pop and to tie back to the burgundy sofa in the living room area. However after painting the table grey and the chairs burgundy, I noticed the place looked a little dark so to make things look more fun I decided to add another fun accent color into the mix to brighten things up and add some cheer. Also since I am not allowed to paint the walls, it only makes sense to have some colorful furniture.

Make sure that your paint is well blended, I stirred it inside the can but also made sure to pour it into a small container mixing again to ensure even color. It also is nice to use a small container so that the can doesn't dry out and get lumpy and in case you knock over paint by accident, it won't be a huge mess.

For this piece of furniture, even though I was a bit nervous painting over something dark, I didn't use a primer but a self priming paint. After 2 coats it looked pretty great but I added a 3rd coat in certain areas to ensure maximum coverage.

I wanted to paint my side tables to bring some of the Blue Spa color into the living room but unfortunately these were more of an endeavor. The side tables are made of metal and MDF board. The self-priming paint doesn't seem to like to stick to the metal portion very well although the MDF board section painted over nicely. I ended up having to scrape the paint off again, use a heavier grit sandpaper to rough up the surface and use an actual primer before painting over it again.

While my work with making my apartment look like home isn't complete, it's been a lot of fun watching it all come together and my apartment is definitely a lot more cheerier and comfortable than it used to be.

Rebecca Minkoff x Baby G Collaboration

One of SRC's fave handbag and accessory designers, Rebecca Minkoff, has partnered with Baby G to introduce a special edition watch just in time for the Holidays.

Lands’ End Canvas Spring 2012

Lands' End Canvas only recently came on my radar after they sent me a really cute sweater to try out a couple months ago. I got a closer look at more of the collection a few weeks ago when they invited me to preview their Spring 2012 collection at the Highline Stages. The event was super laid back and fun with different areas set up displaying the clothes. Artwork on the wall and art students from SVA at work creating artwork throughout the party. Plenty of tasty snacks kept party goers amused - especially because they kept serving hanging food like pizza's on S hooks and hook shaped hot pretzels. Later on in the evening the Boston based band The Wandas entertained the crowd with very chill retro rock tunes.

The clothes really had a charming, slightly rugged clean-cut All-American feel with all the nautical stripes, layering, plaid, gingham, chambray, eyelet and khaki going on. For womenswear the pieces looked really easy-to-wear and cute but fairly modest. None of the hemlines were too short or the necklines too low - just a sweet, wholesome and pretty. While I probably wouldn't wear any of the looks aside from the trench with the rolled trousers head-to-toe there were a lot of great pieces that I wouldn't mind adding to my wardrobe. I was a fan in particular of some of the great accessories - colorful skinny woven belts, little cross-body satchels and leather loafers - yes, please!

While I'm no menswear expert I thought that some of these looks were pretty adorable with the little bright pops of color or fun patterns and the skinny ties.

By the time I was ready to leave it was fun to see how much the artists had progressed and the variety of styles created in such a short amount of time.

Rebecca Minkoff: Holiday/Resort 2011

A few weeks ago I was invited to the Rebecca Minkoff Showroom for a Girl's Night Out event where attendees got to sip on Skinny Girl cocktails (which were dangerously delicious) and snack on girly treats like Macarons and really pretty cake pops from Goodie Bites! It was a blast catching up with some of my favorite ladies while admiring some of the new pieces from the Holiday/Resort 2011 Collection.

Some of my favorite pieces included these stunning pony peep toe shoeties with the subtlest hint of metallic shimmer. I also couldn't help but like the Sweetie Bow Clutch in beige with rose gold hardware. I know that sometimes too much hardware can start to look cheesy but this little bag was so over-the-top that it was just right.

Throughout the night they kept things interested by giving away Mini MAC Clutches to some lucky attendees who got a chance to have them personalized with initials by Jenni of I Spy DIY. And while this particular night wasn't lucky for me I still had a blast.

Nautical Stripes and fresh vibrant colors like hot pink, cobalt blue and lime green were refreshing and fun while classic shades like Red, Black and Grey looked new in ostrich and quilted finishes. Tan with black and white looks very modern again. One of my fave new bag shapes is the bucket bag - Rebecca Minkoff's version in a soft grey with woven details and braided handle comes pretty close to perfect.

Apple Opening: Grand Central

I quickly stopped by the opening of the new Apple store in Grand Central Station. Normally, I would never venture out to an opening like this where there's guaranteed to be hoards of people and no shopping incentive - but I work right at Grand Central so I made my way down with my co-worker to take a break. It's Friday!

The line looks daunting but it moves extremely quickly - we were in within 5-10 minutes after receiving a silver wristband.

The space is massive - and there were tons of people. There were plenty of stations set up to test the products out, much like every other apple store.

One thing that I noticed were these pay stations set up at the tables to make checkout faster. I've seen the portable checkout stations employees carry but never ones that were stationed at the tables.

If you're one of the first 4,000 shoppers to enter the store, they're giving out free T shirts to mark the event.

Sale Report: Filene's Basement

Filene's Basement at Union Square is taking 30%-50% everything in their store. Heck you can even buy the racks, changeroom doors and other fixtures if you need!

The majority of merch is on the lower end of the discount range (i.e. 30% off) but you can score staples like underwear from Calvin Klein at 30% which isn't too bad. Shoes are all 40% off - everything is all over the place which is expected but I did see some Sperry Top Siders for $48. Clearance items that have an orange tag are an additional 40%.

The racks marked "Vault" are where they keep their designer goods - all of which are 50% off! Sizing is completely random, as are styles, but if you're willing to put in a bit of time you might be able to score something amazing.

The most plentiful of the designer merch was Missoni Gear - so if you missed your chance with the Target X Missoni madness - maybe you can score something better now! T shirts were going for $40, polos $50, jeans $50 and knitwear ranged from $100-$140. Keep in mind you definitely need to dig around and scour - alot of the merch is there for a reason but you can still find some decent things.

Out of everything I saw, these pieces were one of my favorites (partly b/c they were in the best condition as well). Both were going for $120 a piece.

The sweater shown above left was pretty amazing too. The texture on the knit was incredible which is what Missoni is known for. I tried this on - but it was stretched out quite a bit from being hung on the hanger - otherwise I would have totally picked it up. If you're into prints, the above cardigan (cotton/linen mix) was going for $140.

Patchwork knits were priced on the lower end and will set you back $100. If you can pull off that orange without looking like a pumpkin - go for it.

Overall there's some decent stuff to be had - you just have to look and dig around. I suggest you take a few passes at the Vault racks since things keep moving around by the minute. Things get picked up but they also get put back - so patience is definitely a virtue in this scenario.

Kotur Clutches

A while ago, I was introduced to a line of beautiful clutches, purses and handbags by New York City born and raised designer Fiona Kotur. Since 2004, her collection is sold under her maiden name Kotur has been sold by retailers all over the world.

She walked me through the beautiful collection and explained that her inspiration for her Spring 2012 collection was derived from architecture, particularly that of Zaha Hadid. Kotur first encountered Zaha Hadid with the the awe inspiring Chanel Mobil Art Exhibit.

One of the first things I noticed as I looked around the showroom were the remarkable illustrations of the purses that were created by her mother, the remarkably talented fashion illustrator and interior designer Sheila Camera Kotur. I'm always fascinated when talent and creativity run in the family.

You can definitely see the architectural influences in the some of the clean modern shapes - especially the Seno Minaudiere. The designer uses unexpected materials like Perspex acrylic to inlay into some of the minaudiere (clutch case) creating a very beautiful and quite unique multi-faceted jeweled effect. The pieces just seem to glow in a way that makes them look almost like little works of art.

"Overall the season's motif is about contrast: classic silhouettes in industrial materials, natural fibers creating abstract forms, organic shapes with synthetic materials. The palette is bright and optimistic, but always played against neutrals; Cerise against Sand, Saffron with Bark, Ocean paired with Naturals. As for materials, I played with Perspex like melted marbles, color-wash straws and buntal dip-dyed in acid colors. The frivolity of contrasting one style against the other."

These are pieces that look classic enough to be kept for generations and unique enough to be noticed, even on special occasions. Since the designer is a believer in high-low, every collection has bags available in a wide range of price points from $300 to $3000. Coming Soon: Park & Bond Pop Up Shop

WWD announced that Park and Bond will be collaborating with GQ and hosting a pop up shop in the Meatpacking District. The store is set to open on December 7-18, 2011 at 414 W 14th St and will offer menswear pieces, footwear, watches and gadgets for shoppers. The store will also house some items hailed as the "best stuff" of the year which is featured in the December edition of GQ.

The pop up shop is set to have different events running each day including a special promo by Amex for its cardholders.

According to John Auerbach - President of Park and Bond, "we have no plans to add bricks-and-mortar". To me, not to set up permanent shop makes perfect sense since it goes against the online empire Gilt has built up. Nonetheless, its always nice to see things in person before you buy.

If you really can't wait until the shop opens up, head over to Park and Bond (they're currently having a sale online with select items up to 50%).

Sample Sale Report: 3.1 Phillip Lim

The 3.1 Phillip Lim Sale after work was only moderately busy, last season had been somewhat of a zoo so we were expecting the worst but there was no line to get in. All bags and coats must be checked, even if you have a tiny purse. You are allowed to keep your wallet and your cell phone. Make sure you hold on tightly to your coat check card as there was an earlier incident during the day that had staffers on high alert. When the ticket fell off my purse staffers asked me to identify what was in my purse in order for me to re-claim it. At least you know your belongings are safe.

The sample sale was divided into 2 sections with accessories and menswear on one side and womenswear and childrenswear on the other side. Since there are no fitting rooms the divide did help women changing in the corner gain some privacy although since a large mirror was right by the checkout line some ladies just went for it and changed out in the open.

I headed for the shoes first as they are priced right at just $100 a pair. There is a moderate selection of shoes left although the smallest shoe size I spotted was a 37 and many shoes seemed to be in the 38-40 realm. Some shoes didn’t seem to be marked so you really just have to try them on in order to figure it out. The majority of shoes that were left were variations of espadrilles, wood platforms, ballet flats or flat sandals. Everything had a very Spring vibe so perhaps it was not an area of huge interest for most shoppers gearing up for the winter season. Maybe it was better stocked earlier in the day but the variety of styles wasn’t high.

Ladies were scouring the accessories rack for treasures and although there isn’t a huge selection there are still a few cute structured handbags left ranging from $150-350. If you are willing to look through the tangle a whole lot of belts for $50 each.

The menswear area looked relatively empty and it didn’t seem too difficult for men to find what they were looking for.

The women’s area was a different story as women circled the room like hawks looking for treasure. Most of the pieces at the sale seemed to be one of maybe 2. There were not very many styles that there were multiples of or very many sizes. There are however some very beautiful pieces to browse through. While the depth of goods is not as good as previous sales the prices seem slightly more reasonable and are similar to that of the Save Japan Sample sale that the brand held previously.

In womenswear the prices ranged from $25 for swimwear to $300 for n evening dress and up to $800 for a shearing coat. The best prices were in the swimwear at $50 a set and Initials Line with bras for just $30 although I didn’t really spot very many. T-Shirts Pants, Jeans and Shorts were also reasonable at $50-$75.

There was also a small selection of adorable childrenswear that was$25-$125 for the stylish kids in your life. Another sweet deal at the sale were sunglasses at just $75 a pop! I may have snagged the only pair of eyeglasses left for $75.
