NYFW Spring 2011: Frank Tell

Right after the Costello Tagliapietra show last Friday, Lani and I ran to catch the Frank Tell presentation upstairs at Milk Studios. We made it just in time to get a glimpse of the last couple of models making it into position and standing for a couple glorious minutes before taking a finale exit. I’ve been watching New York City based designer Frank Tell for quite a few season’s but it was the first time that I had a chance to see his clothes up close and personal.

Frank Tell’s Spring 2011 collection had in my mind a 3 very distinctive categories in monochromatic palette of 3 colors - black, white and grey. With their poufy hair and nude lips the models look slightly 60s and slightly outer worldly. There is the light angel and the dark angel and not much in between.

First off were the tailored pieces. Pants are slightly cropped and lines are very clean for a very wearable slightly futuristic vibe.

Secondly there were floaty dresses that fit and flowed around the body in a very easy to wear way - hemlines were short and although done up, the dresses have a casual not trying too hard vibe that would make them perfect for just about any occasion. Sexy but not showy - great little numbers that would be perfect for a date!

Lastly, there are the knits that look like they are partially alive, organic and seemingly growing on the human figure in the kind of way that moss grows on trees. It is in the knits that I find so much interest and a great desire to reach my fingers out touch and furthermore reach my wallet out and own. They are textural, they are sheer, they are fuzzy. They are gorgeous.

Overall a very tight and solid showing for Frank Tell, I can't wait to see what else the future might behold for this young designer.
