Bones, The Look for Less

I had previously talked about how bones were a trend to watch. I've just found a way you can get the look for less. These bones aren't the spinal bones seen at McQueen Spring 2009 runways, or the X-rays of Narcisco Rodriguez Spring 2009 but actually based off fish bones! Check out the Target Tie Die Leggings in Fish Bone for $12.99. They give you the feel without being a direct imitation and they won't empty your wallet.

Sample Sale Report: Nikka New York

Stopped by the Nikka New York sale a couple nights ago and I noticed there were about 8 well laden racks of Indian inspired clothing around the room.

The cheapest items were the $35 rack of tops and dresses with voluminous sleeves in a very indian inspired patch work. I liked the top versions. Then came the $55 Rack I think it was all one or two styles of the same sort of thing that didn't really grab my attention.

There was one rack with randomly priced merch and I spotted a floor length cotton sundress for $45.

The other 5 racks contained newer merch with dresses ranging from $95-135. Some looked more like party frocks while others were more day wear with interesting metal beads. Metallic Jacquards, cotton blends, silk crepe de chine and heavy beading was abundant.

Worth a look if Indian Inspired clothing interests you. Some looks were definitely work worthy day wear pieces, but others looked a bit too decadent to wear on a regular basis.

Eyeglasses - Alain Milki

I bought these from eBay over the weekend under the inFLUence. That was so Carrie Bradshaw of me. So the glasses, I was super excited about them because I had seen them once before in real life and never expected to see them again since they're from the 1980's! New old stock, score!

The glasses were only $30, but they're going to cost me quite a bit in a total. I'll need to get lenses, obviously, but I'm also going to need nose pads added to accommodate my flat Asian nose. I don't hate my nose, but I hate how difficult it is to find glasses that fit. Most of the time my eyelashes will touch the lenses before the frames even come close to touching my bridge. It's a curse! Moving on, I am so pumped about these glasses and can't wait to wear them.

By the way, did anyone watch America's Best Dance Crew tonight? Yes, I'm watching MTV, and yes, it feels dirty. I've been rooting for legit all girl crew, Beat Freaks, but I don't know. This last episode, Quest Crew killed it. Every second of their performance was unbelievable.

Mark My Words, Designer to Watch: Mark Fast

Canadian born Mark Fast was one to watch at London Fashion Week! The knitwear designer was one of 2 that passed the New Generation selection committee this season.

And boy did he knit up a storm. Thuderstorms to be exact! He tells Style.com that his collection is about "that moment of fear and negativity, mixed with something that also feels beautiful."

If you're a fan of sexy, edgy body con in the vein of Azzedine Alaïa or Hervé Leger with and edgy kick, he's one to be on your radar.

Also, to note he hand knits each piece on a knitting machine, so no mass produced stuff here...which is kinda beautiful...but DARN! Not coming to my closet any time soon!

Trends: All Ruffled Up

Koi Suwannagate RTW Fall 2009, Jill Stuart RTW Fall 2009, Ralph Lauren RTW Fall 2009

The Fall 2009 runways tell us romance is back via soft ruffles in varying materials like chiffon, tulle, mesh and knits. The look is more ethreal than sickly sweet and the tones are tinted lights that that look slightly dingy. Ivories, nudes and smoke blue seem to be the way to go.

Trend Report: Cuffed Pants

Images courtesy of The Sartorialist for Style.com

New York is ready for a flood! The fashionistas are any way. Last week Fashion Week I couldn't help but notice all of the exposed ankles. There were some harem pants, some cropped pants, but most notable were the cuffed pants.

Cuffing the bottom of your pants is a great way to transition into spring. It's very breezy and casual. Loose leg pants work best, but I think that's given since I don't think anyone could physically roll up their skinny jeans. If you can, please eat something.

A tip for keeping this look polished is to wear closed toe shoes. While it's still cold out, rock the ankle booties, and once it warms up, play with your boat shoes or wedge sandals.

DIY: Oh Holey Tee

So I bought this thin T-Shirt from Free People a while ago to use as a layering tee. I loved the slightly pastel neon shade and the softness. But the instant I washed it it started falling apart! there were almost 13 little tiny holes all over the place after the first wash! Talk about poor quality. And after attempting to sew and close the holes, I realized it was best to let the tee be what it always wanted to be. Anyways, I remembered a photo from an old Teen Vogue where the model was wearing an extremely holey tee under a cocktail dress with luxe jewelry on top and wondered if I could achieve the same effect. Destruction for creation?

I started by making more holes with a seam ripper. I ripped horizontally across the tee to create bigger holes and vertically to create skinnier runs. You start the runs by pulling threads in towards the hole, the when it starts you stretch the fabric up and away from the hole to help it grow in length to wherever you want it.

Sometimes if you want bigger stretched out holes you can poke your fingers through some of the runs for a varied effect. Repeat many times. But make sure you try on the tee occasionally so you can avoid making holes in spots that would be too Mean Girls.

Voila, a holey tee I can be proud to call my own ;) It takes alot of time and patience surprisingly to get this right but it's kinda therapeutic as you watch a movie or listen to music.
